Over the past couple of years I've acquired three small OEC diamonds, which I eventually would like to put in a five-stone ring. I was thinking of getting two more diamonds but lately have become intrigued with the idea of using a pair of sapphires instead. I'd like to have the stones bezeled and milgrained to look sort of like the ring below, except I want the stones to be open on the side. In my search for small sapphires, I'm coming across mostly step-cut stones and have been recently told by a vendor that they would require much deeper bezels than brilliant-cut stones. I'd really like for the bezels to be as thin as possible. It'll probably be a custom-made setting. So how does one go about creating a ring like that? Do I need to search for precision-cut stones? (Not seeing anything in the size that I need). Is there a way to work around this with step cuts yet still have even and thin bezels for all the stones? Should I just stick with diamonds? Would appreciate any advice!
