Question about bezeling sapphires in a sapphire diamond band

Over the past couple of years I've acquired three small OEC diamonds, which I eventually would like to put in a five-stone ring. I was thinking of getting two more diamonds but lately have become intrigued with the idea of using a pair of sapphires instead. I'd like to have the stones bezeled and milgrained to look sort of like the ring below, except I want the stones to be open on the side. In my search for small sapphires, I'm coming across mostly step-cut stones and have been recently told by a vendor that they would require much deeper bezels than brilliant-cut stones. I'd really like for the bezels to be as thin as possible. It'll probably be a custom-made setting. So how does one go about creating a ring like that? Do I need to search for precision-cut stones? (Not seeing anything in the size that I need). Is there a way to work around this with step cuts yet still have even and thin bezels for all the stones? Should I just stick with diamonds? Would appreciate any advice!

No precision cut stones needed and it is definitely very possible to have a collet bezel 5 stone ring with sapphires. What mm size are you looking for? I am also confused how there can be step cut rounds, unless you mean a modified round brilliant cut, which will be all there is for coloured stones with rare exception.

Chrono, thank you so much! The type of bezel in Mim's ring is exactly what I was thinking, good to know there's a name for it! The diamonds I have are a pair of 4mm stones and one that's about 4.6-4.7 so I'm thinking 4.3-4.4 for sapphires? I was actually looking at a pair on Etsy (from Yvonne) and she mentioned that all sapphires coming out of Sri Lanka "are 100% step cut." Do different sellers use different terms for cut? Is is the same thing as modified round brilliant?

One other question, would a 0.1 mm difference in diameter between the stones be a concern?

Do you mind posting a picture of the "step cut" sapphire? I'm guessing it is a modified round brilliant which is combination of a brilliant crown with a step cut pavilion. Unless you are measuring the stone with electronic calipers, the eye isn't able to detect a difference of 0.1 mm even when the stones are side by side.

Yes, they are modified round brilliants, which is very common in coloured gemstones. Price looks good for the colour and size. I would verify with the vendor that the windows will close up on the hand, or at the very least, look smaller to match the open culet of your OECs.

Thanks! Any thoughts on the stones in general? Wondering if they'd be too dark in a bezel setting?

Cup the stone (cover the pavilion completely) in foil or by hand to see the effect.

Thanks for the tip! She does have a generous return policy so I can definitely try that. Just want to make sure there are no red flags that I should be aware of before I buy.
