This may sound like a corny question, but please note that we are newbies to the online diamond community

We would like to upgrade my e-ring. Basically, we are mounting the stones into a right hand right and just purchasing a brand new one. The place my Fiance purchased my ring from was a local jeweler, who had a lifetime guarantee so long we brought the ring in for cleaning and inspection every 6 months..

How does this work if you purchase online? Is there such a thing as guarantee when you buy online?

TIA!!

The guarantee is only as good as the person giving it.

There are no set rules.

Your lifetime guarantee merely means you can trade it in for a more expensive stone which is standard.

I just sold for a client on E-Bay the three stone diamond ring which you can see in my icon.

The starting bid was $11500, no reserve. It came with a 21 day guarantee that the description was accurate.

The buyer took it immediately to her appraiser and she is a very extremely happy person now. The flip side is that if the appraiser said the description was wrong and she bought from somebody who decided not to stand by their guarantee, she could have had a nasty experience.

I have another case where an appraisal client is still trying to get their money back on a misdescribed piece on E-Bay. The Jeweler's Vigilance Committee guaranteed the funds for the client's appraisal (which were to be re-imbursed to the JVC by the loser). The sad thing is that it is probably going to be less hard to try to get a refund by using the muscle of the credit card companies.....So it is a bad situation which you really don't want to get involved with.

The bottome line is that you have to feel 100% about who you are dealing with, online or off. Online is good to make initial contact but I think the telephone and some personal dialogue should take over after a while.

Gemologic- Thank you for the feedback!

So..if we buy online (looking at affinitydiamonds.com) and about 6-12-24 months down the road, a prong or stone is loose, we would have to pay a local jeweler to fix it?

Thanks again.
