QUESTION for Jewelers re: Settings: Can you set a diamond i

QUESTIONS: (Thank you in advance)

If I have a setting made for a general size, say 1 carat, can I then shop around for a diamond and have the jeweler I buy the diamond from set the stone?

Would there be any problem in setting it? It's a new, but old fashioned illusion setting.

Can they set a .90 carat stone in a setting made for a 1 carat?

They would just make the setting for a general 1 carat well cut stone?

Also, am I right about sizing my finger? I was thinking of going to 2 or 3 jewelers to get sized before I order the set.

I want to buy a setting from the internet, but not the stone. I want to be able to take my time and find
a stone that fits my setting and then have it set.

Is this ok to do vs. having the jeweler over the internet ship me a stone I buy firstto look at, then I have to approve and send back to have made with the illusion setting? or I could buy a diamond at home and ship it to the jeweler in the other state.

I rather have the setting here and then take my time and find the perfect diamond for it. I know I want around a 1 carat, not more because I want to keep my budget below $6500.

Thank you for your help. I hope I can get the setting done and shop around for the perfect-fitting stone.

Re: QUESTION for Jewelers re: Settings: Can you set a diamo

why not get the stone first, and have them make the setting to the measurements of the stone?

Re: QUESTION for Jewelers re: Settings: Can you set a diamo

Yeah, it's going to be a lot harder to find a diamond to fit a setting, rather than have a setting fit the diamond.

It would be easier to get the stone first, and then search for a setting. Stones with the same carat weight can vary in diameter, so there is no guarantee that a stone bought after the fact would fit the setting.

Also, am I right about sizing my finger? I was thinking of going to 2 or 3 jewelers to get sized before I order the set.

You may want to consider getting sized in multipl band widths as well. A 5mm band will be more snug than a 2mm band. and may need to be a larger size as a result.

Again, it would probably be wiser to get the stone first.

Re: QUESTION for Jewelers re: Settings: Can you set a diamo

Thanks for the answers. I don't want to deal with shipping a stone etc. In the stores they have settings you can buy that are ready made. What do the jewelers do then?

Re: QUESTION for Jewelers re: Settings: Can you set a diamo

after looking at diamonds this weekend and speaking w/ various jewelers, i've decied to get the setting for a 1carat size and find a diamond after. stones vary too much to pick via the mail. i didn't like any diamonds. hated solasfera, too many sharp sparkles. hope to find the perfect stone

Don't choose something with a bezel or ornate integrated prongwork, you may be setting yourself up for trouble. As gecko said -

Re: QUESTION for Jewelers re: Settings: Can you set a diamo

make sure when buying the setting that will accomodate a 1ct, that you are able to use a smaller stone-bigger stone in the setting incase you come across a stone you like that isn't 1ct.

It is easier to get a stone, and then buy a setting/head to accomodate the stone than vice versa...but that is your call.

Re: QUESTION for Jewelers re: Settings: Can you set a diamo

Of course it would be easier to go for the stone first...but either way is possible as well.

It really comes down to how ornate of a setting you are looking to get.

A classic prong head can be adjusted no problem within the varying 1ct mark proportions.

If you describe what type of setting you want and shape of center stone, we would be able to give you better advice.
