Hi, I live in miami and going to get married in the spanish monastery. I am catholic and so does my fiance, however, the church is not!! It is episcopalian. I have heard that if I get married there even with a catholic or reformed catholic priest, Rome and catholics will not recognize my marriage. Is that true?

hmmm interesting question. Can you ask your priest at your home church? Maybe he can offer some guidance?
My (greek orthodox) aunt married my (catholic) uncle in a greek church and as far I know there is no issue from the catholic church with it. He is elgible for communion still, etc. they have been married almost 18 years.

Hi...yes it is true...

That''s where I am having my reception! (I think you asked this question on the knot?).

Anyway, call your catholic church...but what I can tell you from speaking to about 4 churches is that for the Roman Catholic church to recognize your marriage (meaning it goes on your baptismal records) it HAS to be performed inside a catholic church.

You can have your ceremony there, but n the eyes of the church you won''t be married. This is not important to anyone, but I''m just stating the facts!....

Good luck!

It is true.

In rare instances, a special dispensation will be granted and a priest will be allowed to officate at a catholic wedding outside of a catholic church (building). An example of a ''rare instance'' is getting married at a nursing home because your grandparent physically can not leave it and you always wanted them there. (That is a true story.)

Dispensations are not granted because a couple likes a building or wants to be married on a beach.

Retired priests will sometimes perform marriages outside of a church (building), but it will not be recognized by the Catholic church (institution).
