Hi everyone
I had bought my gf a sapphire ring a few months ago, I’ll post a pic.
My question is, i want to get engaged in a few months. Should the size of the diamond be comparable to the size of the sapphire or it doesn’t matter at all? Thanks everyone 990A57BD-0AFD-421A-B64C-E14426028ACE.png

The ring, size, style, type of stone should only matter to your fiancée and you.

Is the future proposal a surprise or does she know about it? Is she “expecting” a diamond, or does she prefer a sapphire? (These are just questions you can ask yourself, as you seem unsure. We here on PS don’t need your answer, unless you wish to elaborate.)

It’s a beautiful ring. I hope she’ll be thrilled with it. Best wishes on your upcoming engagement.

The size of the diamond does not matter in relation to the sapphire size. Caveat...you do want it to stand out
and hold its own though IMO. The sapphire ring is really pretty by the way.

What size of diamond are you thinking of?

Thanks a lot. She loves it, there was a bit of an Issue with the sizing but I am getting it resized.

I Am thinking of getting a stone around a carat with a halo setting to make it look bigger. I showed her some cz stones to get a reference of what size she likes and she liked around a 2 carat size which is a bit much for budget but w a halo setting i know it can easily look 2 carats.

She’s fairly traditional so I will go with a diamond, her bday is sept so sapphire is her birthstone that’s what made me get that for her

I don’t think it matters compared to each other. They are on different hands.

I don’t think the size matters either, but I’m sure the ER should cost more!

If you are considering purchasing a round brilliant cut diamond, and your fiancee really likes a 2 ct size, then I'd recommend purchasing a diamond from a vendor with a really good upgrade policy. Many people eventually upgrade the size of the original diamond for a signifiant anniversary (I did for my 15 year anniversary).

We like to suggest Whiteflash here on Pricescope because of both the excellent quality of the diamonds and their unbeatable upgrade policy, but even Blue Nile has an okay upgrade policy (2x the original amount spent).

To the original question, I think a sapphire in a halo is a special kind of look that is supposed to look large so it will be fine.

Definitely talk to your GF to manage expectations… if you can’t afford a 2 carat then tell her that so that she doesn’t “hope” for a 2 carat. Agree that you could buy from a vendor like WF with an upgrade policy so you could get her 1 carat now and then upgrade in the coming years. You could also get a lab grown diamond.

She wouldn’t care if it’s lab grown or not, she’s really not a showy type of woman.

I’d prefer to get her a real diamond because she deserve all the best.

As long as the stone/setting looks big I think it will look great on her. I think a halo setting is the way to go bc it will look big without the huge price tag.
Thanks a lot everyone for the help and advice I really appreciate it

I think I know what you are ultimately meaning...
But lab grown diamonds *are* real diamonds.
If you wish to stick with natural/earth grown, then go for it. Plenty to choose from!

Sapphires and most colored gems are cut much deeper to retain the color than diamonds.
The darker the gem the smaller it looks.
Very bright sapphires in bands should be 10% larger than the diamonds to appear the same size.
And finally carat weight has nothing much to do with size.
Diamonds are 3.5 times heavier than water and sapphires and rubys are 4 times heavier than water.
