We are currently in the process of looking for kitchen appliances. We need a fridge, stove, microwave and dishwasher. I thought I wanted stainless steel, but in looking around I see so many "silver" options: real stainless (will show fingerprints) ultra or santana stainless (won''t fingerprint), and stainless "look".

What to choose? I''d like the non-fingerprinting real stainless. Is there a common name for that?

Does anyone have stainless and if so, what do you think?

I'm not sure what the stainless look but not really stainless option is called, but the family I babysit for occasionally has this and it is GREAT. It always looks clean even with three little kids constantly touching it.

But I don't know how it performs, only how it looks!

I think it is termed what you call it. It is real stainless that might be coated. A lot of complaints have been logged about the maintenance issues with stainless.

In my new house I am looking at some different options, I currently have all stainless and I love the look but it needs constant wiping. It is hard with three kids to keep it pristine. I also did a stainless hood over my commercial range and let me tell you NEVER AGAIN. It is a total dirt and dust magnet. It looks gross all the time.

even with just the two of us in the household, stainless is an upkeep issue. i love the look though.

Stainless Steel has a great look and is reflective so tends to ''add'' to the decor in a way a white appliance does not. We had one a while back that was kinda plastic coated and always looked great - I think it was a Belling?

Thanks so much for your help, but I''m still a little confused (actually more than a little). Please correct me if I''m wrong, but price-wise the "stainless look" is the least expensive, stainless steel the medium priced and Ultra stainless the most expensive.

We did some research at Future Shop where the so-called salesman was more interested in playing with his computer than looking after us even when I told him that we were looking for 4 appliances. He suggested.....get ready..,go to Sears!!! Can you believe it?

We took his advice and went to Sears as it is the only other major appliance store in town. The salesman here couldn''t tell the difference himself without looking at the tags. Oy Vey!

Maybe next time I should specifically ask for a saleslady, so I''d have better luck.

I want you all to know that I maintained my composure throughout

. Please pass the pitcher of margaritas right now!!

One other question: Is the Ultra Stainless of one company the same as that of another company, or are there differences in colour/texture??

I don''t like the stainless look. We have stainless steel. I love the look and don''t think the upkeep is too bad. Of course ask me once my little one starts walking. I might change my mind. Can I have a margarita?

Thanks Tacori. Of course, you may have as many margaritas as you wish as long as you''re not nursing little Tacori.

Others have said that the stainless look is cheap-looking, but on 4 appliances it makes about a $1k difference. We''ve had our old white appliances for so long that I''ll be glad to see the end of them. They''ve served us well; our fridge is nearly 45 years old and still works like a charm. I''m sure it''s gobbling pricey electricity so it''ll be interesting to see if the bill goes down a bit.

I think what we''re going to have to do is go to one of those big box chains like The Brick, find a knowledgeables salesperson, and weigh our options.

I love the oil rubbed bronze appliances by Jenn Air. They are beautiful.

HI:

We have SS appliances in the kitchen and Titanium in the laundry room. Less "marking" on the latter. I looked at Sears, Future Shop, but not the Brick ; however ended up buying at Trail as they offered the best deal. FS does price match if they have the items in stock. Sears offered a lot of information, but their prices are higher--even on sale. I believe they might price match if you have an advertized price to compare....

cheers--Sharon

Penn- those oil rubbed Jenn Airs are so beautiful...I coveted them but had no idea how to "make it work"...I did get the stainless one though...
I think stainless look looks like silver spray paint...I just got all new stainless stuff so let''s hope they aren''t too bad in terms of maintenance..

Someone on PS suggested furniture polish for SS so I have been using that and it helps w/fingerprints. I like the clean look; we have LG and the stove is JenAir double oven. We bought everything from Home Depot since they were running a deal and it was a little cheaper than Sears. Have you checked out Consumer Reports?? I like white appliances too. Happy Shopping

We have all brushed steel appliances and I love the look. It has the same appeal as stainless without all the annoying upkeep. Even my dishwasher is brushed steel outside and you can not see the dripples and drips that tend to accumulate on the door of the dishwasher. When it''s time to clean them I use a little Pledge multi surface cleaner and everything looks brand new. Our fridge opens close to our breakfast nook counter and my SO''s niece has slammed it against the counter so many times there is a small indent in the door but because it''s brushed steel, you can not notice it unless you peer at the fridge at an awkward angle (like you would if you owned it and heard a small child slam the door against a counter top!).

Our stove, over the range microwave, and dishwasher are GE. They have been fantastic! Our fridge is a Samsung and the fridge itself has been fine but the digital display has had a few issues. However, we bought our fridge from Best Buy and purchased the maintenance plan so if we have to call them out for a third visit, no matter what we are calling for, we''re entitlted to a new fridge. Just knowing I have a replacement plan makes me feel good!

Like everyone else on PS, I big-puffy-heart Skippy. Just seeing the name and associating it with one of the pictures she''s used in her avatars makes me smile.

I''m getting to the point that everything she posts is secondary to her enthusiasm.

We have not chosen our appliances yet as we are expecting to have a height issue with the fridge. Due to cupboard constraints it has to be 65" or less which severely limits our choices We won''t know for sure until the new porcelain tile is laid on top of a 5/8" plywood base. As of yesterday, we''re walking on floorboards. If we were open-minded and pretended that they qualified as flooring, we could have one of my dream fridges.

Yes, brushed steel is certainly my first choice and GE was the maker of our almost 45 year old current fridge. At one time, my dad sold the GE line in his appliance store and the models then were so basic that there were never complaints from his customers.

An update re the appliances. First, the typo on the height of the fridge was 65", not 65'. With the new flooring down, the fridge had to be no more than 64 3/8" which is even harder to find. I finally found one made by Fridgidaire that lists the height as exactly that. Fingers crossed. We also bought a microwave, stove and dishwasher today. All are brushed stainless steel with some black and all made by Fridgidaire. They were all in stock and will be delivered April 10th. Another decision made!! Yippee! More money down the drain

Great news; how exciting!!!

I know it isn't fun spending the money for all new appliances but once they are sitting in your kitchen and all shiny new you will feel so good and happy that you bought them.

HI:

Cool. I know height was originally a problem for our new large French door fridge--because the cupboard aboce had a facade that took up two unnecessary inches--simply for appearances. So I removed it and the fridge fit perfectly!

cheers--Sharon
