I have to be sure. I am going to be going to a tanning bed for a little color before the wedding. AND... I really did not want to take off my rings to do it. Well, is the UV light going to hurt my spess? I probably already know the answer, but you know I am so protective about this stone... I just wanted to make sure... See... stupid question...

It''s not a stupid question at all Mine!!!!! I wish I knew the answer for you but I don''t. I have been researching gems though, after fading an amethyst ring, and have found out that amethysts and peridots and quite a few others fade in strong sunlight. It seems that many colored gems do except for sapphires. I hope someone can answer your question specifically but in the mean time I wouldn''t take a chance with your gorgeous ring!

Mine, I went back and looked at some of the "care" sites I had been looking at and none mention garnets fading in sunlight but they all mention avoiding temperature changes. Just an FYI.

Good question...

The colors are supposed to be stable to light exposure (sunlight = UV too... etc.) in any doze. And the sensitivity to head refers to the jeweler''s torch not washing hands in hot water (safely) or sun bathing (same).

But... I can''t say I found direct evidence that garnets do not get a tan.

You wouldn''t ''experiment'' would you

Mine, why not turn the ring around on your finger so the spess is underneath while tanning? otherwise, i''d take it off....just to be safe.

movie zombie

ps there is another spess project being discussed in another thread

Do you ever take your ring off? I hope you do.

You should -- here is why. A lot of grime can accumulate in hard to clean/see places. Since you see your ring everyday, it is hard for you to notice, but if you compare it to when you first got it, you can see the difference. I would recommend not wearing your ring when you are doing personal grooming like showering or applying moisturizing creams, or for doing house chores too (like work in the kitchen, garden, etc...). This can also protect your ring from dings and scratches. I''d also recommend inspecting your ring frequently for any signs of damage. If you find some -- you should take your ring to your jeweler. I guess this post is off topic from wearing the ring in the tanning booth -- but - do you want those tan lines anyway?

I asked my best friend who owns a chain of tanning salons and she said ''Take them off!!!'' Salons are not responsible for any damage that may incur and it''s just safer to leave them at home even. The most left behind items are keys, lotion and jewelry. If you take them off in the salon you could forget them and the next person in may not be so honest. She has a worker go in and clean up and make sure nothing is left behind between visits but alot of places don''t. She''s not sure if the rays can damage the stone or not but better safe than sorry.

I just started going to get a little color myself and I leave my rings and watch home or in my handbag. My husband is going tanning as well and one day he accidentally left his cell phone. He does business all the time this time of year and just left it when he got redressed, so taking as few things as possible--especially your rings--is best.

Thanks for your recommendations, I am sure that they are a good reminder as to how to take care of your ring.

I am pretty anal about my ring, so I probably have that stuff under control.. but thanks for the info.

Anyway, As for the tanning bed part. I went ahead and left my rings at home, much to my dismay I assure you. Unfortunately, That means I have to go through part of the day not wearing them. I hate that. I love the tan lines I get from my rings though, (makes my life feel more.. permanant) since I wear them when I lay out in the sun, I suppose that helps.

I am pretty scatterbrained sometimes so I don;t want to wear them and take them off and I do not want to not wear them.. ah well, it is a temporary thing though. Thanks for all your help and advice everyone.!!!

MINE: Please be careful when laying out in the sun. The older you get you don''t want to get skin cancer. That is happening to my dear friend now and she is my age 56. She was a sun worshipper. Please use a good sunscreen. I don''t mean to sound like a mother here. ha ha ha ha ha.

LOL.. NO problem. I find myself in the sun less and less as I get older. I was a sun worshiper in my early 20''s, but not so much now... I get too bored sitting down doing nothing... and I HATE being hot.. I am an Air conditioning lover now.

I should say that when I am standing on the soccer sidelines instead of laying out... is when my hands tan.
