Red Dreams: finally scratched my unheated Burmese Ruby itch!

So, many of you are aware that I’ve been on 20+ year quest for an epic unheated Mogok Ruby.

I’ve bought & seen a lot of Spinel and Ruby in that time, but none of them scratched the itch.

Two days ago, I finally found it… But it’s not a Ruby.

Do you know those “pure vivid red”, hyper fluorescent Burmese Spinel that don’t really exist?

I found the damn unicorn.

It even holds up in “the ugly lights.” I’m still utterly in shock.

Couldn’t afford it, but couldn’t pass it up… Will likely have to sell more stuff and pay myself back… But…

TOTALLY. WORTH. IT.

1.76ct, deep, tall crown, loupe clean, hyper fluorescent and the reddest red spinel I’ve seen in 25 years.

Now all the rubies I see cower in shame. My search is over.

Ogle it indefinitely. I’m still in shock that I found it. I went to see a completely different stone and the vendor had this one on hand.

I freaked out. I’m still freaking out.

The challenge now is to do something truly epic with it.

I have a feeling it’s gonna be a while before I come up with that design… And even longer before I can afford to make it ;p

Well, it was meant to be! When I saw this particular spinel on Instagram, I couldn’t take my eyes of it. I have never come across such beauty, it is incredible!!!
Funny, but I remembered your gem collection with that velvety cornflower sapphire. What a beautiful addition! You must be over the moon! Take a billion pictures, your little gem deserves it!

You can rest now and bask in your glory and success. In all honesty, even if you were able to get this set immediately, that would take away from this period of just… feeling the satisfaction, you know? Not everything has to be rushed. Take your time to just enjoy.

Thank you! I’m trying to suspend the pressure in my mind to come up with some sort of epic design suitable for holding this little miracle of nature. No pressure or anything :p

But in all seriously, I’m perfectly content to just stare at it in a ring holder or play with it in tweezers.

I have a whole lot of work to do for my job right now, but it’s frankly hard to do anything other than behold this little carbuncle and savor the awe that comes with it!

Yes, this! When we “fall in love“ or feel “over the moon” (limerence) our brain is awash in this wonderful admixture of dopamine, oxytocin, phenylethylamine, DHEA, and a few other compounds that escape me right now… And it’s better than any drug that you could make in a lab grow on a farm or by in the street.

It might sound crazy to the general public, but I know you guys will get it. I think this is a very similar feeling.

… so I guess I’m pretty high right now :p
