I''m continuing my quest to get some more red into my jewelry. I''m taking a look at this 0.67 ct oval ruby from Gary Dutton (thanks, Storm, for the many times you have recommended Gary!), and I''m liking what I see. This is a very slightly purplish red unheated, untreated Burmese ruby, 5.03x4.35x3.68 mm.

First, the picture from Gary--

Now, my attempts. Glowing a bit in its little box.

Did a bit of a photo shoot this evening. Diffuse sunlight behind it.

Mixed lighting...

A ruby and diamond necklace in 18k yellow gold that I got circa 1991, but almost never wear since it flips badly. I think that the newbie is a nice color match to it.

Finally, a cool photo from the vendor showing the red flourescence of the ruby, compared to the blue fluor of a diamond.

I''m thinking of a ring, set in 18k yellow gold. This ruby is stop light red in incandescent lighting, but does a bit of a color shift to more of a raspberry red in sunlight. I was looking for the red-red traffic light color, but since I love color shifting gems, I think the purplish berry color is cool as well. By the way, the stone is eye clean.

Lovely!
Thank you, Harriet!

Really pretty! I dig that red fluorescence!

I like how in this picture you can see some splitting out of purple and pink from the red. According to Ed Bristol (Ruby-on-Photo) that is a supposed to be a good thing. In any case, this is a pretty stone in person, and I am most pleased with the red color.

Thanks, coati! I love, love the red fluor as well!!! I''ve read that Thai rubies tend to lack the red fluor, because they are high in iron, which blocks it.

sweet ruby congrates.
Glad Gary was able to help you.
What I like best about Gary is you can take his descriptions to the bank, what he says you will get is what it is.

Beautiful Ruby, I love the sparkle

I love your ruby! And the necklace that has a flipping problem too. Will you change it somehow to fix the problem?

Very pretty ruby!

Wow Flygirl, what a gorgeous ruby!!! I love rubies. heehe

Lovely, I love the color!

Thank you Storm, Linda, innerkitten, ltlfirecracker, Skippy, SDL, and threepwood.

The jeweler already tried to fix the ruby and diamond necklace flipping problem, and it kind of worked. At least it isn''t constantly flipped. But, it still flips about once a day, so I am always checking the thing. Very annoying.

What a lovely Ruby!! Congratulations...necklace isn''t half bad either ...I''ll be glad to put up with the flipping if you want to send it my way...Next to Alex, Rubies are my all time fav coloured stone...
All the best

what a beautiful ruby, i cant wait to see it set!

Thank you Psichedout and msflutter! I''m visiting an appraiser tomorrow before having it set.
