Hello!

I think I would like a red (Mahenge) spinel. It doesn't have to be Mahenge, but my colour preference is for a vibrant red (pinkish undertones okay). Size 7-9mm round/oval/cushion. I'm still in the early contemplation stages of this project, so am interested in where to start looking and am after recommendations as to the best suppliers to consider. I'm in Australia, so this can make it tricky to view/ buy/ return stones, so want to do some research first.

Thanks so much for your help

For colour reference - this is the type of colour I'm looking for, taking into account I'll be setting it into a ring and don't want it to look too dark once set.

I agree with MrsKMB. Great at at Finewater always seems to have pretty red spinels. He also has a range of prices. The morganite in my profile pic is from him. It’s much prettier than my photo, but in hand looks identical to his photos. That’s my only experience in matching his photos to stones. I know reds are notoriously difficult to photograph.

I think Ivy New York is a good place to start. Lots of red spinels, even the seemingly saturated ones, totally black out in direct sun, so if you don't want that, you might want to specifically ask the vendor about that. That would be the biggest deal breaker for me.

This has been my experience with Mahenge red spinels that are more red than pink but I have not experienced this with Burma spinels. I think the OP would be wise to seek out old stock pink/red Mahenge spinels or red Burma spinels. I have heard Vietnamese red spinels are also very nice but I have not purchased one so I defer to others who have experience in buying them.

Thank you everyone. I will be certain to ask about saturation and blacking out in the sun.

Is there anything else I should look out for?

I'll start with Fine Water Gems and Ivy New York. Are there any rules of thumb regarding price?

Thanks again
