I searched online and your forum is the best that I can find among all. Thank you so much for helping me in previous topics. I have another question based on a small red stone. I really do not know what type of stone it is. Can any of the experts on here help identify it? Thank you so much!

Any appraiser or gemmologist or hobbyist with a refractometer can give you the answer within minutes, or at least narrow down the possibilities greatly. It looks very large, possibly at least 10 mm?

If it is just a pic you found and can't test the stone I will make a guess at diffused andesine.

We can only guess just by looking at it.

Synthetic ruby, or maybe a garnet variant? The only way to know for sure is to get it tested by a local gemologist.

It's about 15mm. Perhaps, it's garnet or synthetic. Thanks a lot for the replies!

I have some exciting news. The stone is not synthetic or garnet. It's a natural stone and will be sent to the lab for further examination. Thanks for the help!

Exciting indeed! Did the person who ruled it out, have any possibilities as to what it might be?

Will you be sending it to AGL? (chuckling that you called a 15mm stone "small")

Please post up the results from the lab when you receive them. I'd be very interested to see it. :)

Very exciting. Which lab did you send it out to? If garnet or synthetic is ruled out, what did the GG think it is?

It has not yet gone to a lab. It will be submitted very soon to AGL. The pre-examiner said the red color is somewhat sweeter than garnet and the inclusions are not of a garnet or synthetic material. A specific identity was not disclosed to me. Thanks!

Does anyone know how much it costs to send it to the lab since I don't know the identity of stone (see image) and I want be able to identify it in the initial form? Thanks in advance for your reply!

An AGL Gem Brief costs $60 plus shipping. If you don't know what it is, just put "Red Stone" on the form. They will figure it out quickly from their testing.

Just an fyi - if its mounted in a setting when you send it, they charge a bit more, I *think* it is more like $75 (but I'm too lazy to go to their website and check).

@minou - You're always so kind to help an amateur. I went to the AGL website and I found the information as you said. Thanks a lot for both replies.

Sweetpea song10431, we are ALL amateurs! I have a few mounted stones that I have yet to send to AGL, so if you send yours, I can learn from you!

Just curious but what did the pre-examiner do? RI testing will eliminate most of possibilities.

The examiner only looked at it under different light sources and through a magnifying glass. However, I do not believe that a RF test was done at that time. I will soon send it to the lab and when I get any information from them, I will post it. Thank you so much for all the replies!

hi, it seems like to be a red hessonite gemstone because of its red color. Well i guess it is a hessonite gemstone because it is dark red so it comes n category of red hessonite stone. However, since i am not a gemologist, but i can suggest you a site based on my qon experience with them. You can share your picture with them and in real time they will get bacjk to you. They have a nice online support system. here is the link i guess, it will help you: http://hessonite.org.in

The person who examined it said the stone is not a silicate from the family of grossular garnet. I'm certain that he lab can identify it and I shall post the information as soon as I know. Thanks for the response!

I had it unmounted in order to send it away to the lab. What do you think of it out of the setting? Thanks in advance for your answer! 0001ab.jpg

This is my last question about this item. I took some photos of it positioned table-down and discovered it had deep pink-colored/angular/parallel lines crossing the facets. They are also fine-lined with a watercolor texture. Is anyone familiar with this particular feature? If so, what are they? I do not want to waste time sending it to the lab if it's not worth it. Thanks for a reply!

Can you post a photo of what your describing? Or does it look like this and the white lines can change directions 60 degrees too?

At this point I am almost ready to send you the money for a lab report in order to satisfy my own curiosity!

Hard to tell without pictures; could be growth lines, zoning or something else.

Below is the image.

I'm afraid to say that does not look natural, but looks like some colorant added to the stone. At this stage, you really just need to get it tested; it would be hard for anyone here to help you any further, unfortunately. :(sad

Minou, thank you for responding so quickly! You've been very helpful.

I would definitely send it to a lab; it's not looking very positive as it reminds me of flux or hydrothermal synthetic growth lines.

Chrono, I agree with you that it could be synthetic as you stated before. No point in sending it to the lab anymore. Thanks!

Do you not trust the pre-examiner's opinion that the stone isn't a synthetic? I recall you mentioned it a few posts up above.
