Hi Ladies!

I haven''t posted on PS in a really long time...so much so that most of you are like, sammyj who?

But the reason why I''m posting is because Fi''s aunt contacted me yesterday to ask me to give our registry some more thought. She specifically requested that we need to think of a ''big ticket'' item that his side of the family can go in on together (I guess it''s tradition?)...something in the $1000 range. I tried to tell her that we don''t really need anything, especially since we don''t own a home yet as we are planning to move across the country by the end of the year. The only thing that I''d say we need (and want) in that price range is cash; but I can''t very well tell her that, can I?

FYI, we have registered for some pricey cookware and knife sets at Crate & Barrel that are in the $250-$400 range, which are our only items over $150.

So, I guess I''m asking PSers if there are any ''big ticket'' items that I''m overlooking, or how I can convey to Fi''s aunt that we don''t need anything?

Thanks!

I immediately thought Dining Room... but if you are going to be moving across the country, that is just something that you would end up paying to have moved.

I don't know... Could you and your FI should sit down with his parents and ask them thier advice. I'm not loving the whole idea of having to pick something extravagant and expensive just so that his family can buy you what they want.

FWIW, we didn't have a single item on our registry that was over $350 (and that was the only item above $250). We also put our dining room table on there ($$$$), but only so that we could buy it after the wedding with the completion discount.

If you guys are planning to move - and im assuming his side of the family knows this

maybe you could tell her to have the family contribute toward a gift card. Tell her it would be wonderful to be able to choose furniture, appliances etc. after you move to your new home. You can either choose a store that you know is in the area or just ask for a visa/mastercard type thing. If they feel it isnt "personal" enough (as my mom does) they could always choose smaller items from your registry and add the gift card with money on it to create a basket. I wouldnt add "big" items on my registry just so that they have something to pitch in on - it will end up being more hassle than you need.

Would it be possible for you to select something for them to go in on, but for them not to buy it or have it delivered to you until after you move? Are there any pieces of furniture you''re planning to leave behind that would need to be replaced after your move? Or is there anything you don''t have now that you''d want in your new place? If so, I''d have your FI talk to his aunt and see about the possibility of delaying a bit -- I''d think/hope people would be understanding about that!

I don't have an answer to your Q, but just wanted to say HI!!!

Haven't seen you around here in friggin forever! When's your wedding girl? Did you finally decide on a venue?

My BIL is getting married at the Art Gallery of Hamilton this summer, and when they told us about it, I immediately thought of you!

A wedding we''re attending next weekend has a tv on it. They might be going for the completion discount, but it''s an idea.

Maybe you could pick out a piece of furniture to be given after your move so you can have it delivered to your new place?

How about a vacation, they have all those sites that can contribute towards a trip now.

Hi ladies,

Thanks so much for your responses so far!

meresal - I''ll definitely talk to Fi''s mom about it but I think it''ll have to wait until next week or the weekend after when he''s back in the country (he''s been abroad for work for the better part of the last 7 months making wedding planning a pain in the arse!). This would all be easier if we owned a home!

farfrompro - our move isn''t set in stone as we''re waiting to hear back if FI got into grad school. Everyone knows that my plan (which quickly became his plan too!) was to move from Ontario to Vancouver! I like the idea of a gift card or visa card and will suggest it to FMIL, but ya, they may push for a more personal, concrete item.

Octavia - I don''t think I ever got the chance to tell you that I

your wedding band! It''s hard to say what we may or may not need in our place if we move...and what could be delivered. I can''t plan that far ahead! haha.

kama - HI!

The Art Gallery of Hamilton will be a fabulous venue! We are getting married on May 29th (too soon!) in Waterloo in a garden ceremony in the park and the reception at Grey Silo (golf course). Some romantic, rustic, chicness...

sunnyd - We got a new tv a couple of years ago but otherwise FI would be all over that!

Amizizzle - I just had that thought as well and looked up honeymoon registries! I''m worried though that his aunt will still be looking for something tangible but I''ll bring up this idea with FMIL.

Thanks again! Keep the ideas coming!

I remember you, Sammy!

J and I would have picked a really nice DSLR. You can use that for so long, and take wonderful pictures on your honeymoon, vacations, of future children, pets, etc. Its the gift that keeps on giving!

Hi elle! Congrats on getting married! I had a chance to take a look at your pics....absolutely stunning!

A DSLR is a great idea! FI has had his eye on one that''s ~$800 I think. Althought this gift would be more for him as I hate taking pics...I''ll add it to the list!

I really dont have any help, but just wanted to say Yay! Sammyj's back! :)
