So I was watching Say Yes to the Dress (love it!) and my SO was watching with me. And he said something to the effect of "Why don''t women rent their wedding dresses instead of spending so much money? Why''s it such a big deal?"

Is this a "guy thing" or is he really clueless??

I guess it''s a logical assumption considering that the majority of men rent tuxes for weddings. While it''s true that women just don''t rent dresses, I don''t think he''s completely bonkers for wishing we could all avoid the expense of bridesmaid dresses and wedding gowns we''ll never wear again anyway!

It''s the norm in other countries! If it weren''t for the fit issue I don''t think it''s such a bad idea! But I am not a sentimental person...

When you think how much stock a bridal hire shop would need to carry - x dress in however many sizes multiplied by however many different styles they would need each season, plus the fact that they would need a whole new lot every season, it wouldn''t be cost effective for anyone to do, especially when ebay etc are out there.

Menswear doesn''t really change too much. Morning suits in the UK haven''t changed in decades!

Thing is, I am sentimental to the extreme. I''m a little discouraged that he doesn''t realize this... I''m not looking to spend thousands, but a nice amount for a good quality dress. And I will wear it again. And again and again...

Just for fun.

We both want a tiny ceremony with probably just our folks... so no bridesmaids'' dresses or anything to worry about. So I just want this ONE thing. It''s important to me. And I hope he won''t gripe about it.

I would totally do it! Oh my goodness. That would be so easy.

But then I''m not terribly sentimental about clothes. Or much in particular (except for jewelry).

ha I saw this thread title and thought, "OMG what a great idea! Where can I find a rental place?!"

I understand the sentimental part, but I wouldn''t ever put it on again. And then, I could get a $$$$ dress w/o the hefty price! Perfect!

I''m sure it''d be a nightmare w/ fittings though for the rental shops...

I defiantly would rent my dress if I could

I am not cheap but I have never really had "that" dream of a big fairytale wedding in a designer dress.
My dress will probably be pre-owned. Hey, if it fits, looks good, and you can afford it then why not wear it.
I also don't think that $$$ makes for a beautiful wedding dress. People can lose touch with reality when planning a wedding. Remember, it is only one day.

My SIL rented her wedding gown, and one of my best friend''s sister was going to rent a gown, but was told she was too short. Any dress she picked would have to have the hemline raised too much to put back down, so she had to buy a dress.

I wound up finding an Anne Barge gown on eBay for a STEAL & it insanely gorgeous & would''ve been waaaay out of my budget if i had ordered it brand new from a boutique. Otherwise, I probably would''ve wound up renting a dress, too. I''m not that sentimental, I love my gown, but will still resell it eventually.

I will probably buy a designer formal dress or a really great bridesmaid gown. Which will be cheaper than a wedding gown. But I''m kind of quirky in what I want so that will probably work for me just fine.

I think more women should think about that option. There are tons of BM dresses out there that come in white or Ivory. And they are usually under $200. Can''t beat that with a stick.

There are lots of places that rent dresses in major cities, at least here in Canada. A friend of mine rented hers for about 400$ but she was able to get one that was brand new and in her size!

There is a bridal place here that does rent gowns. You can pick literally any gown you want (no cost barred) and they alter it to fit for around $500. If they don''t happen to have the style you want they buy it and bring it in. They do a brisk business.

Man, I''d be all over that! Unfortunately, since most women do not fit the standard size measurements (myself included), it''d be really difficult to do. I think me tend to be a bit easier since there are several pieces to the outfit rather than one and they tend to be a bit more standardly shaped.

I think it is because lots of dresses are altered and it would be hard to unalter them etc. I rather buy a dress and then sell it?

I would TOTALLY rent a dress if I didn''t have such issues having a small waist and larger chest (I know their are worse problems to have). Been married before and can say... Even while happily married that beautiful $800 dress sat in a box (I had it preserved) in the back of my closet. Such a waste of money.

Lots of places actually do rent out wedding dresses.

I personally couldn''t wear a rented gown to my wedding...there just seems to be something off about the idea in my mind...but, I would never judge someone for doing so...if you cannot afford the gown you want, but could afford to rent it... why not!!

Whats that saying...

Fake it till you make it?

I have never thought of renting my dress but now that you mention it, can you do that? I mean it is a great way to save and I doubt I would ever want to save it for a daughter''s wedding. My mom saved hers and *gag* It is an awful dress but was beautiful for the 80s (think lace, long sleeves, poof everywhere, and *a hat*). No thank you. My mom did lend it to her cousin and she WASHED it in a washine machine so the dress was ruined. Oh well. My mom laughs at it now fully understanding that the dress is so 80s.

Anyway, I would rent my dress if I could alter it.

I''d totally be down with the renting of a dress. Although I also liked a PP idea of buying a designer evening gown or nice bridesmaid dress. I''m sort of hoping to go this route but I am just a little worried I''ll get caught up in everything, try on some fantastic wedding gown and be unable resist it. I guess time will tell

"...if you cannot afford the gown you want, but could afford to rent it... why not!!"
I don''t think that it is only about being able to afford it or not! Some people would rather use the money for something else ... in addition one could also make the argument that it is more environmentally friendly! Think about it: spending thousand(s) on a dress you will wear for one day! Renting/buying used is smart, independent of one''s financial situation.

Thanks for adding this perspective. It''s not all about the money, to me, but my footprint on the environment. Do I really need to buy brand new things when it''s already "out there" somewhere? Tough questions, even considering diamonds as well!

But yes, it''s not always about the money, although that helps.
