Hello,

When sending a GIA certified diamond for repeat analysis (lost cert, old cert etc) does the GIA invalidate or get rid of the old digital report?

Thank you

When was the original report done?
Is the stone laser inscribed by GIA?

The original report was done in 2017. It was not inscribed by the Gia, it was subsequently inscribed by a third party a couple years later

Are you assuming /hoping for different grading results? If not, I’m curious the origin of the question.

Interesting question of how/what GIA does with old /changed report info.
I’d be suprised if they got rid of the info completely. Maybe made it inaccessible to random searchers looking at digital reports on GIA’s site - but not inaccessible to others?

Yes I am just curious to know if they will remove the previous inscription and “void” the previous cert # if the grading changes or if the diamond continues with two separate certificate numbers.

I believe it continues under the same report number and the report just gets updated.

I purchased a stone last year that had been GIA reported a few years ago. The previous owner of the stone had inscribed 3 numbers into the girdle after the last report was done. The dealer sent the stone in for an updated report before shipping it out to me to make sure the specs were still the same. The updated report now mentions the inscription whereas the old report did not. The specs were the same and it’s all under the same report number.

It is my understanding,
If they can 100% id it as the same diamond they update the report vs issuing a new number unless the report date is before 2000 or so.

GIA counts that the subsequent inscription invalidates the original GIA anyway, although I don't think they delete it from the database no matter what you do.
