I have this ring from a broken relationship. It’s about 15 years old and it was a birthday gift. I would need to make the band quite a bit larger. I don’t know if it’s a garnet or a rubellite. It was around 300 then. I’m wondering if it pays to put 200 into it, or let dead dogs lie. He broke my heart. 11DB1C26-02DF-4D53-A219-F7ADDDB53B30.jpeg.

It looks like a garnet based on the 1 pic ...

You can keep it as a part of your past, you can pull the stone if you love it and it carries no bad memories and re-set it, you can sell the ring preloved, or you can sell it for scrap metal value.

If he broke your heart and that's what you think of when you look at the ring even today 15 years later, then I suggest you put it aside in a closed box of mementos -- at some point in the future you'll come across the ring or think of it, and you'll know if you're ready to make a decision on it yet.

Looks like a Garnet to me too.

DK :))

I personally wouldn't want to keep anything that reminded me of someone who broke my heart. But only you can decide what is right for you. If this were me I would give it as a gift to someone who likes garnets. And be done with it. But you need to do what works best for you and there is no right or wrong here. Just what is right for you

Agree.

I think there are two separate but related things going on here. First, there's the sentimentality issue. Does the ring hold good or bad memories for you or neutral? How would you feel if it went missing? More relieved, sad or indifferent?

Then there's the piece itself. If you saw it at a shop and were told you could have it in your ring size for $200, would you purchase it or not?

I sympathize, and I'm sorry he broke your heart.

But I, for one, don't connect stuff with a person.
YMMV.

For me, when a relationship ends so does any of the ring's association with that person, same with the house we lived in, and the pots in the kitchen.
Now it's just a ring.
It is released from all the gobbledegook I might imagine into it.
Your bad feelings are not in the ring itself; they're in your head.
You have tremendous power over what's in your head.

I would either keep or sell with no regard to the "bad juju, karma, bad luck, etc." whatever mystical supernatural connection that I invented and placed on it.
The ring itself is innocent

There is no right or wrong choice here.
You get to choose how to use your mind.

If when you look at the ring now and it still reminds you of the pain of your broken heart, then I think it always will represent that to you. Is there someone you might like to gift it too?

I vote sell - particularly if you never want to see it again.

Kenny, my feelings exactly, but then we are guys. My wife is completely opposite. We were going to go camping one time until she found out years before I used the tent with an old girlfriend. Out in the garbage the tent went, I was off to Eastern Mount Sports to buy a new tent.
