Hi all! I just got engaged and the bf gave me a ring with this diamond!

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1317098.asp?b=16&a=12&c=77&cid=131

To my inexperienced eye, I think its quite beautiful in person with tons of sparkle but neither of us knows how to read the idealscope or the hearts and arrows picture. what do you guys think of it? He paid about $8000 with the pricescope discount for the diamond, is that a pretty decent price?

I'm also wondering whether it is worth getting an appraisal for a diamond that is already set. Can an appraiser accurately verify the AGS report when its in a setting?

Our ring came with an appraisal but its appraised for almost $4000 more than we paid. If we get another appraisal, will that likely also have an inflated price? Is it worth getting a 2nd appraisal just to get our insurance premium down? If we get the ring insured at closer to what we paid, will we be underinsured? Doesn't the jeweler have to replace with a like quality diamond? We are insuring it through Jeweler's Mutual if that makes a difference.

The appraisal that came with the ring basically contains the AGS number and a price. It doesn't mention that the diamond is H&A and we did not get the idealscope or H&A images with our ring so I'm a little concerned that we don't have enough documentation to give to the insurance company. Does anyone know if James Allen will spend me the images if I request it?

So basically what I want in a appraisal is just to make sure that the diamond hasn't been damaged during setting, that it is the diamond described in the AGS report (is that any way of seeing the inscription number myself???), and to get a document with more details about the diamond (ex: that its H&As), and possible to get a lower insurance premium. Based on that, should I get an appraisal or is that just wasted money?

Idealscope image looks good.

During the appraisal, ask for the replacement value. Some insurance allows one to insure base on receipt, basically what you paid for.

Matching the diamond to the report will be easy with a mounted stone, determining if the mounted stone is the exact carat, color and clarity as the report will not be easy.

Checking with mounting damage and the quality of the setting, and job done on the setting is what the appraiser is paid to do.

To see the inscription, you will need a loupe, probably around 30x magnification, and some practice, assuming it is not covered by the prongs.
