Hey ladies, just should I would share my funny experiences with you all today ring shopping. I am truly amazed at some of the rubbish people are trying to pass off as 'ideal cut'. I went to many B&M stores in Melbourne today to get an idea of prices, but having already decided to purchase online.
I went to one place where a SA showed me a GIA certed stone, and I mentioned that the table size was a little large and the depth of bit high for my liking. And she said, no, well this is still what we call an ideal cut. I said that I wasn't really sure about that, and she insisted again that this was an ideal cut GIA stone. At that point I had enough, and said, well at a 60% table with a depth of 64% it doesn't even come close - and it isn't even an excellent, but a very good. She just looked at me in shock. I sort of felt bad for her, but I was just sick of people trying to tell me how well their stones are cut, when they are quite terrible. Don't get me started on the 'very well cut stone' I saw the other day with a 66% table. Anway, I said that I was looking for something more in the range of ....... and rattled off my AGS ideal specs and the woman's mouth just dropped open and she turned to her manager bewildered! He practially jumped over the counter to come and help me, and simply said, oh, you are looking for a really really well cut stone then, let me just check the stocks for you. He almost pushed the SA out of her chair to come and butter me up.
I just feel like I should have confidence in my jeweller and really can't stand when they aren't being honest.
Another place, I was told that nearly all diamonds come in G SI1, and it's very rare to find other colours and clarities. She also told me that their stones are all reall well cut, but when I asked about AGS or GIA, she didn't know what they were. She told me that I didn't have to worry about the stone or the certificate, that diamonds are one in a million and I should just buy one that I like the look of straight away as I will never find another one just like it. She also said that finding a nice setting was much more important and we can find a stone to fit later. Oh yeah, and SI1 and SI2 are TOTALLY eye-clean (yeah, if you have your eyes shut
)
On the other hand, I went to see a lovely gentelman today and asked to see a certificate for a stone I liked the look of. I was genuienly suprised at the number and commented on how nice the table and depths were, and also noted the crown and pavillion angles were just right. His face lit up and he said wow, I am so impressed by your knowledge. Are you in the industry - I said no - I am a Pricescoper. He went on and on about how nice it was to have a client who knew what they were talking about and who could appreciate a well cut stone and the importance of cut. I really wanted to give him my business but the price was a little too high.
I have nearly decided, now down to a few stones. But the incredible price difference, AGS000 branded H&A, 0.7ct, yellow gold setting, almost identical specs, D VS1 Online vendor $7400, overpriced B&M $21,000 - no prizes for guessing where I am going!!!!
I just feel so indebted to PS, without the incredible education and support from this forum, I would have no idea what I am looking for and would have certainly ended up with a far inferior stone, more than likely from the place who told me that the only diamonds I could buy are G SI1!
