Rings that "look good on your hand" - advice please!

Ladies, I know this will make me sound like a moron - especially since I'm on *this board* of all boards - but I didn't realize until today just how much of a difference it makes to have a style of ring that looks good on *your* hands.

I have short fingers. I've admired some RB with halo rings but it never occurred to me until today, while trying on cheapo-RHR rings at the mall, that this style would make my fingers look even shorter. I have the same problem with any but the thinnest bands - my fingers shorten as soon as I put on a thick band. I'm especially bummed about that realization, since I've seen (and loved) some gorgeous, gorgeous bands that could stand alone without an E-ring.

Any suggestions for ring styles that would minimize the stubby look of my short little fingers? :))

Do you like rounds? If you're not particularly attached to a cut, I like elongated shapes to elongate fingers - like emeralds or rectangular cushions.

I, like you, have short stubby fingers, and I realized that square stones look much better on my hand than rounds :)

My fingers are a little short too, which is why I'm planning on getting an oval with a fairly simple, thinner band. Some people say that make the hand look even shorter, but I did what you did (tried on cheap rings to get a better idea) and ovals just looked right on my hand. Try some different shapes, you'll find something that looks right, I promise

(eta: geez, this has to be my last post for today... i'm the last poster for 5 threads in a row )

I also suffer from stumpy-finger-itis with a heaping side of knobby knuckles. My ering works beautifully with my issues. It's a rectangular cushion with a thin band. And I let my nails grow out to help.

Here's a shot:

I too have very stubby fingers. I have tried on Princess cuts, RB, but my favorite is an Oval. I like how Ovals look anyways but because my fingers are short the Oval helps make it look a little longer, also a little thinner. Also, i like a thinner band than thicker.

I also have stubby fingers but I love the way my RB looks on my hand. I let my nails grow out or I get acrylics because they always end up looking longer that way..

Hm, I had never really given much consideration to emerald, cushion or oval cuts. I guess I automatically assumed emerald cuts would be more expensive, since flaws don't really hide very well... I will need to look into those... I'm not really attached to a particular cut. I don't grow my nails out - I actually keep them as short as possible since I play the violin - so that doesn't help them look any longer!

I wonder about a split-shank setting with a thin-thin band?

Also missydebby, your ring is beautiful!

I have the opposite problem. My fingers are long and skinny so any ring that is at all chunky looks bad. Those lovely rings that have a thicker profile (like ones with a lot of antiquing details) just look out of place...I had a jeweler once tell me that I'm lucky since a smaller stone will appear bigger on my fingers. My response? "Imagine how big a BIG stone will look!"

I work in a B&M and help several women a week work out what suites their hand. Just go try things on, go to a jewellery shop close by that will have the biggest range and tell the SA you want to figgue out what suits you.

It's really hard to generalize but women with thick and short fingers can look better in three stones, delecate bands, smaller center stones and elongated center stones (Pear, oval, cushion, radiant, emerald). There seems to be no rule yet that says who will suit square shapes and who suits rounds, you just have to try them on.

I have kinda stumpy size 8 fingers (must grow out nails!) and after trying on every ring in my store I am resigned to the reality that BIG (stones, halos, settings, shanks etc) just don't suit me ;(

I too have big fingers, size 8.5, whats weird is the tip of my finger before the joint, looks really skiiny so my fingers look weird. I also keep my nails short since im still learning/playing guitar, and its so hard to have nails and play guitar.

missydebby I don't think your fingers look stumpy!

I would just get what YOU like...but it can't hurt to try on different styles.

A-Ha! My elongated cushion has fooled you! ;)

I wouldn't have thought it was possible, but the elongated cushion certainly looks great on a "short" finger.

I'd just try on a bunch of different styles and shapes and see what you like and what look good. I have small hands and my fingers are pretty short. Before I tried on rings, I was sure that I *didn't* want a RB; I wanted an asscher. Then I tried on a few and I didn't like the way they looked on me. Square cuts aren't flattering on me at all. I also tried on RBs with halos and didn't like that either. So...what did I end up with? A RB (with pear side stones). I love it!

My fingers are really short, and before buying I'd read a lot on how ovals would make them look longer. That wasn't the case for me. Ovals and rounds made them look shorter. Large stones made them look shorter. The only style and size that looked good on me was a princess cut of about half a carat.
