I need some advice on a mahenge spinel that was originally cut as a cabochon, but then changed to a rose cut. I don't have any proportions other than the size of the stone and that it is eye clean with the exception of some silk. Any thoughts ?

Here are a few photos of the rose cut mahenge to help visualize. Any thoughts would be appreciated since I have no experience with rose cuts. Thank you ahead of time.

Hi GL,

I am not going to comment on the color of the stone because I do not feel that I can make an accurate statement about it based off of the pictures that the vendor has provided. That being said, I think that you have to consider two things. The first is how you feel about silk in gemstones. Often, stones that have a lot of silk have a "sleepy" appearance. Some people like sleepiness and others do not, it all depends on your personal preferences. In my opinion, I like sleepy mahenge spinels as long as the color is truly neon. I personally do not care for mahenges that are sleepy/silky and do not have the neon factor because these stones tend to look flat and lifeless to me.

The second factor to think about is the cut of the stone. Again, some people like rose cuts and others do not. It might not sparkle very much due to the silk and the rose cut. However, rose cuts can be very beautiful and sparkly just in a different way from a more transitionally cut and faceted gemstone. If you have not seen sleepy gems or rose cuts in person, you might want to try to see some examples in person before you buy this ring. That being said, the seller does have a return policy if you order the ring and do not like it in person.

I personally LUV silky stones but as said before they're not everyone's cup of tea. I think the ring is well executed and being its a rose cut colored stone and not a diamond, there's no need for a backing plate.

These stones when they have a lot of silk come to life in UV or sunlight. They should also be pretty in other lights too. But they will not look lit from within as they do in UV or sunlight.

This one is mine in sunlight. This is what I mean by lit from within.

If you've never seen a stone like this in person, do.

If you are in the US, I recommend seeing the stone/ring in person. Silky and rose cuts are so very different from faceted stones. In this case, it is doubly different because the stone is translucent from the silkiness and being a rose cut. You may not even get much glow due to the colour not being neon and as a rose cut.

+1 She has a great return policy, and is wonderful to work with, so I second the bold part. The only way you'll really know is to see it IRL.

Thanks for all of your input. Arcadian I love your stone. The color is wonderful. Yes I like the silky, sleepiness of this stone. It will be my first Mahenge spinel so I am excited to see it. And while I love this one, I will also hope to add one to my collection with a regular cut that has more glow and sparkle one day. I should have it in a few weeks. I went ahead and purchased it and it is being sized. :appl:

Awesome, sleepy stones are a lot of fun :appl: Can't wait to see your images!

Thank you ! I hope I love it as much as I think I am going to. I am partial to bezel sets and also to contrasting metal colors and the photos where the stone is brighter has me excited because I just love that deep mauve color. It is a mahenge and the vendor said it has some glow to it in certain lighting, so it sounds great to me. I can't wait to get it. :P

Just wanted to say that I love the look and style of the ring (and I am not a fan of sleepy stones but I would want this ring..the cut and setting go well with the stone). I hope its every bit as beautiful (if not more) in person!

I'll definitely jump back in here with my review of it once I get it in my hands. (finger)
