I need some help in making a decision about detail on a bezeled diamond band that I’m having made. The basic ring will be fourteen 3mm diamonds; which will be slightly over a ¾ band but not a full eternity. I selected to not do a full eternity in order to leave a sizing band for future resizing if ever needed.

However, I will not leaving the plain space totally unadorned. I have no plans for immediate resizing. That area will be engraved like it is with my rose gold, roses & diamonds band.

Anyhow, I have a chose of having a rose engraved in the platinum at the center of that space or adding an actual small, sculpted rose. Attached is the CAD with the small, sculpted rose. I am considering an accent yellow gold rose (if I go with sculpted) on the platinum band. That would be the only gold on the ring. The other adornment will still be an engraved design in the platinum.

I’d like feedback on others’ opinions about how the sculpted rose would look. Good? Weird? I know the final decision is my personal opinion, but at this point, I’m undecided.

What do you all think?

Skip.
1. It gets in the way of future sizing.
2. From afar noone will register a carved rose. TBH when I saw the CAD my first thought was that it looked kind of like a skin tag on the metal. Sorry, I can't think of a better way to say that, don't hate me. But for sure, from afar it'll just look like a protruding splotch of unpolished metal - won't read as a deliberated design element.
3. From up close you won't see it as it's on the bottom.
4. The underside of the ring always gets the most abuse, it'll just get bashed up.

1, 3, and 4 are arguments against engraving as well, but to a lesser extent - engraving won't see as much wear as something that physically extends past the plane of the shank. Engraving is beautiful, and unique-but-not-overly-so, and gives you the entire width of the band to design with - much more space.

Thank you!!!

I agree with all 4 points and will going back to my original idea of engraving. The jeweler, making this ring, suggested the tiny, sculpted rose, but the CAD didn't wow me. I originally wanted just a hand engraved rose that I will see; even if no one else does. As soon as you said, "skin tag" I realized that sublimity I was thinking along similar lines about a protrusion on the bottom of the shank. So it's "nay" to the lone sculpted rose.

As you pointed out, engraving does have its own drawbacks, too. However, the hand engraving is so pretty on my rose gold roses & diamond band. I absolutely love that ring!!! So, I can't resist also adding it to this new ring (for a personalized touch), but in a different pattern. Although not super practical, engraving can also be redone in the future if needed for whatever reason.

DKJ has done more than a couple handfuls of rings with cast in details or soldered on - rose, forget me not, fdl, and the like. Some in the same area on ring as you show.
If you like the examples you see on his Instagram (some shown here as well) I say go for it.
I don’t think I’ve seen it next to/incorporated into engraving - but I actually like the idea. But it would have to be pretty smooth and hi relief engraving, I think. How it flows and works together as a cohesive design - I feel that’s largely up to the engraver and how much effort they put into it beforehand in planning it out /execution. How much they like the idea of it -

As for whether it will make it harder to re-size in the future - I’m sure they can take the whole rose off and proceed as usual.

Choices choices :)

Thanks for answering. I've seen photos of a couple of DKJ rings with a sculpted flower added to the bottom of the shank. They were very pretty, and the sculpted flower worked well ethically for those pieces. However, with those rings I saw, the rest of the shank was more or less plain. Plus, if I remember correctly, the flower was also as wide as the shank & not just a dot on the shank.

After I thought about it, I asked about comfort of having a sculpted flower at the bottom of the shank. As I suspected, a protrusion would bother me since I'm tactilely very sensitive. So even if I did like that look on the ring I'm having made (and I don't), problems with comfort alone would be a non starter. So, I'm moving totally away from having any kind of protrusion added to the bottom of the shank.

The diamond bezels of the new ring will extend beyond 3/4 of the way around the band; so, there will only be a small "plain" area at the bottom of the shank. Because I want to personalize this ring, I still like the idea of engraving that area. That means I can have my "symbolic" rose, but it won't be a raised protrusion like in the CAD. Whoever did the engraving on my roses & bezeled diamonds ring did a gorgeous job when engraving the bottom1/4 of my 3/4 band eternity band. Even though most others may never notice it, my seeing the pretty engraving makes me feel good. It's a small detail, but I enjoy looking at it.

Now, I don't know if I want to have the rose etched (with the new ring) just in the platinum and not noticeable to the casual observer, or if I want to have the engraved rose highlighted in a contrasting yellow gold. Although I've been told the later is possible, I've never seen it done.

If anyone has a photo of this technique, I'd really like to see how it looks before I opt to do something that unusual. My 5 stone ring is platinum with 18K gold in the profile. So, I do like mixing metals. But I want to do it tastefully.
