Rose vs. Brilliant Parameters? Types of Rose cuts?

Hi!
I'm in the market for a rose cut diamond (for an engagement ring!). Most places only list parameters such as colour and clarity, but I've started to come across other factors such as cut (the more ideal the better), girdle, depth, table diameter, pavillion angle, and pavillion height.

I'm assuming that since they're different from the brilliant cut, we don't have the same expectations in terms of table diameter, angles, heights, etc.
Does anybody have any knowledge regarding what's best for a rose cut?

On top of that, I did some digging myself and found out that there are a bunch of different types of rose cuts (not all shown here):

So now, I am a little bit more confused, as most retailers simply say "rose cut". LOL.
I love the rose cut, but this is getting a little overwhelming. Do the ideal parameters depend on the type of rose cut? Why don't most jewellers list the type of rose cut they're offering?

Help please!!
Thanks in advance. :wavey::read::confused::shock::eek-2::-o

I think the best rose cut is the one you like the most, and it’s best to evaluate them in person. They’re such a different look than modern or even old European rounds that ideal cut parameters aren’t really used as a guide.

There is no ideal perimeter for rose cut diamonds.

Personally I prefer a high dome, smaller facets, and minimal windowing.

You can look through pictures on xothebijouxbox's IG acct. She's done quite a few rose cut pieces.

CVB inspired designs does a lot with rose cuts and she has a great eye.

I really love the double rose cuts but haven't come across one (loose) for sale yet; I inquired with a few vendors but had no luck.

@GlitterInMyHair and @Octo2005: is there a way to contact these vendors without instagram? I've tried looking for alternative contact info but haven't found any. :saint:

I consider rose cuts to be fancy-cut stones. Even if they could give you numbers they wouldnt tell you much. You really need videos in decent lighting
to help tell you if the stone is doing what you want it to do. A GIA report will give you the depth but doesnt mean much.

I also like the full dutch rose cut. I imagine that most people dont realize that there are many different cuts for rose cut diamonds. They just
know what they like and dont like when they look at one.

Yeah. I was speaking to someone from BGD this morning, and they said that they have rose cuts available from their manufacturer, but can't show me any pictures unless I actually choose one, at which point they will be sent the diamond.
I have heard great things about BGD, but perhaps because they don't stock rose cuts on site, they aren't able to provide the same amount of visualization. What to do in this scenario? I don't like the idea of not being able to see a diamond prior to purchasing.

Like this one?

@miloz I came across the above linked site a week or so ago when another PSer was looking for a pear rose cut and it seems that they have a good selection of rose cut stones and they shipped her stone promptly.

Her thread is here and you can see pics of the stone she selected.

^ thank you miloz for thinking of me!

I am wanting a high color white diamond double-rose-cut, preferably over a carat ... I am doing a few setting projects at present though, and plan early next year to seriously pursue the double-rose-cut search.

No worries!
I've been contacting 250+ diamond vendors, and I came across someone who has a cutter in Antwerp, Belgium that specializes in rose cuts. If you want something custom cut to be double dutch (which might be easier), you can contact her: [email protected]

Let me know if you're looking for anything else--at this point, I've talked to so many vendors that I know what's out there for rose cuts in terms of pricing, GIA appraisals, antique/modern... etc. :) Will probably make a post on the people who carry rose cuts, GIA certs, reasonable prices + excellent customer service.

^ Your planned post on rose cuts sound very helpful.

FWIW I checked out the Samara James website. Seems to be a UK jewelry vendor. "Harriet" pops up as a Live Chat customer representative. I don't see anything on their website indicating any expertise in rose-cuts or custom-cut diamonds. As a USA consumer, it would be unlikely I'd go with an overseas jewelry vendor for a multi-thousand dollar diamond let alone a custom-cut diamond. That said, perhaps by the time I start my search next year Samara James' website will more fully disclose their custom-cut-diamond services and will feature more rose-cut diamonds...

Thanks for your input!
Is the reasoning for purchasing within the USA for easiness of return if there are any issues? What are the other factors that you are concerned with WRT purchasing overseas?

Generally speaking, as an individual in the United States there is no way for me to return anything of value to an overseas country - USPS International registered mail caps insurance at something like $47.xx for most countries, and FedEx and UPS do not insure jewelry/loose diamonds/gemstones. Some overseas companies will provide postage-prepaid return labels or US-based return offices.

More specifically as to Samara James, it makes no sense to me to purchase from a company that has no expertise with antique-cut/custom-cut diamonds and has no information on their website about custom-cut diamonds. Their limited Instagram page shows only modern diamonds. While Harriet may know a cutter in Antwerp who specializes in rose cuts, there is nothing to substantiate Harriet's/Samara James' expertise in rose cuts nor their link to the Antwerp cutter, nor the skill of the Antwerp cutter, and thus as a consumer for me it would be illogical to pursue a rose cut through Samara James. The company being located overseas is the least important drawback for me in this situation.

And an earlier post of theirs, a Countess cut, which they’ve tagged as a double rose cut

Antique rose cuts were cut by hand so there’s variation from gem to gem, depending on the rough they were working with.
Modern Rose Cuts are more symmetrical.
One thing about Rose cuts is that they are “see through”. The style of cutting doesn’t reflect “back out” all light so you will be able to see the finger underneath through the diamond.
Make sure your fiancé to be has seen some in person to be sure that’s the look she is after.
