Friends of mine have been engaged for 5 years (!!!). Basically, family and friends have given up all hopes that these two will actually have a wedding. But little do they know that they''re eloping next month and then having a reception in July

. The invitation basically says "Surpirise! We eloped..." Anyway, they wanted to have the RSVP card wording to be a little different. What do you think about the following?

Get over the shock and come celebrate with us!

Please RSVP by June 14, 2008

__ seats have been reserved for you

[ ] Absolutely.
Wouldn''t miss it for the world!

[ ] Can''t. Still recuperating from the news.
Sending joyful thoughts your way!

I think that the first line should just say "Come celebrate with us". The "get over the shock" part seems a little off. It sounds kinda harsh. Everything else looks good.

That''s the part I was wondering about. I thought it was just me. Should I suggest to them to remove the references to the ''surprise'' factor (first line and the ''recuperating'' part)? You know....encourage them to keep it simple?

Aw, I think it was kind of cute. :) If it was a formal wedding, that''d be one thing, but for this situation I think fun is okay. I can see the issue with the phrase "Get over it" and maybe would think of a slightly less slang-sounding way of saying it, but I love the sentiment!

Not applicable in this case, but I saw a one that had the options:

Accepts with pleasure
Accepts with regret
Regrets with pleasure
Regrets with regret

I thought it was pretty cute and am trying to think of something more fun like that to do for mine.

I agree that "get over the shock" sounds a bit off, but I think going for the "surprise" aspect is cute. What about this:

"Surprise! We did it! Come celebrate with us!"

or

"Surprise! We tied the knot! Come celebrate with us!"

haha i think it''s pretty funny!! what if they sent that one to friends and sent one that''s a little more polite to anyone who might not find it as amusing?

The standard problems with "____ seats have been reserved for you" is that
1) it is a bit harsh for an invitation
2) it allows people to substitute
Some people are willing to live with those problems for the benefit of heading off extras

Like the rest though you could eliminate the "get over the shock" bit for a similar, slightly softer effect.

The recuperating part is okay. Its the the first bit thats off for me.

As for the "____ seats have been reserved for you": I''ve seen that a ton of times so it doesn''t phase me at all. I plan to do it for my own wedding. A more gentle way to say it could be "_____ seats have been reserved in your honor". Its the same thing, just a little more warm.

A few "softer" shock options:

Now that you''ve recovered from the shock...
If you''ve recovered from the shock...
Yes, that was a flying pig...

OK, strike that last one!

I like including the surprise element, but would try to soften it like in one of MINIMS suggestions.

That one made me laugh out loud. I vote for

"Yes, that was a flying pig..."

And take out the "___ seats have been reserved for you" part

They could put a little pic of a flying pig on the RSVP:

The response sections could be worded something like
] Absolutely.
Wouldn''t miss it for the world!

[ ] Can''t. Still getting over the shock!
Sending joyful thoughts your way!

That one was my favorite!

Or Yes, the Devil has a Fur Coat on...

Hahaha I love the flying pig idea!
