for anyone who really knows their rubies, which is not me, i have a clarity question. i was walking through an antique store today and happened upon a case of vintage rings. i saw a red/pink very clear stone surrounded by diamonds, thought it was cute and asked to see it. the diamonds looked so clean i thought they were fake, even through a loupe i saw nothing. they were not bright white though, so when the dealer said they were real i figured it could be true since they were not bright white, more like k color, i figure why would anyone make a k color fake diamond? anyway, the stone in the middle, i asked what it was and was told is was a ruby. i did not believe that at all because it was crystal clear (its about 3/4 ct size) , but the dealer said he was 99.9 percent sure of that (he also owns a pawn shop, so those are his credentials if you will). i compared it to a known ruby and the color was exactly the same, and the clarity was the same, but the known ruby was much much smaller. anyway, i used a loupe to look at this mystery stone saw nothing...at first, and then, a small dark dot, tiny, and then one more in the corner. that was it. otherwise it is crystal clear. would a man made stone have an inclusion or two in it, or is this a real ruby? i bought the ring, and for the price, i got my moneys worth whether its real or not, just based on gold and diamonds. i plan to get it appraised, but lord only knows when i will get around to that. oh, and the cut is weird too, its like an emerald cut, but instead of going straight down, the emereld step cuts sort of go off the corner, does that make sense? it does not bother me, i like it, it looks neat it different angles, so if that''s bad, don''t worry about telling me because i like it and that''s all the matters. any thoughts on the stone? thanks in advance!

I do have a ruby ring and earrings that are clean stones but most genuine rubies you see are opaque. The synthetic rubies look like a different color of red to me. It is really hard to say if what you found is genuine or not but it is certainly possible.

was the inclusions round and or oval or odd shaped?

Clean ruby should always be assumed to be synthetic until proven otherwise by a quality lab.

it just looked like a random shape, like a chunk of something. one is darker and larger, than the other, which appeared to be no shape at all, and a little redder. now in researching, i see that they could be metallic parts from the synthetic process, or they could be chips of mica if they are natural. yea, i would have to take it to a jeweler. the diamonds on this thing are the firey-est (uh, spelling?) things I have ever seen though! seriously, in the sunlight, i could not believe it, i mean, even better than the best stuff i have which is really really good, so just in terms of nice diamonds, i love it anyway. unless someone is going to tell me that around 1970 or so, whenever this things was made, they made really sparkely fake diamonds that are jk colored! gee, dont tell me that!

Hi
I am a gemmologist and the inclusions in the ruby sound like biotite mica to me making the stone natural but it is best to always take it to a qualified gemmologist or a gemmology house.Identification of a stone can take as little as 15 minutes and is much cheaper than you think and can save you a lot of money in the long run!!

thank you! i actually found a web page feature inclusions of natural and synthetic rubies, it was quite exhaustive, but the description and inclusions matched most closely the mica chips, so i was kind of leaning that way, so it''s interesting you should say that. i make some phone calls and see who i can get to take a look at it, if it is real, i got an even better deal than i thought, so i hope so, if not, ill just enjoy what i have, thanks!

I have a couple of beautiful 1900''s synthetic rubies - when they were first producing them they were prized and often set in gold and platinum. So the value of the setting isn''t always a good indicator.

I can see distinctive parallel lines when I look at mine through the loupe but otherwise they are crystal clear - can you see anything of that sort?

That said - you may have just hit the jackpot. But as Strmrdr says, assumed false until certified otherwise.

Please come back and tell us what you learn!

Oh, and WHERE ARE OUR PICTURES???

yes, i know a lot of the older ones were synthetics, as it was a technology that was getting a lot of attention at the time. i don''t think this one is THAT old though. no, i don''t see striations. and yes, you are right, pics are appropriate, so there ya go! it''s not big, but it sparkles like crazy, and i just thought it was cute!

i just noticed that when magnified by my camera, you can see the little black thing and some other little things that i didn''t see before. there is some surface dirt here, and dust, sorry!

and, you can see that weird cut. like an emerald but with more steps and they go off the side. just plain weird, but it really looks neat, more sparkely than the emeral cut i think.

one more, just becuase... whatever it is, it''s vintage, it''s got character, it''s got cuteness and i like it. it actually looks really good with a thin white gold diamond band for some reason. why? i don''t know.

Id pretty much rule out flux synthetic but cant rule out pulled and hydrothermal.
There is a decent chance its not synthetic.
Whats the url of the site you found with the inclusions?

You have many more questions than answers here...corundum?/synthetic?/ruby?/sapphire?/diamond?/cttw?/color/clarity/gold?/K?...answers needed in writing (e.g., on your sales slip) prior to purchase/with purchase.

Good luck!

well, it was an antique store, it doesn''t run like a normal jewelry store.
