Hello, this is my very first post here, sorry if I should have introduced my self elsewhere first. The reason I am here is that I am in the early stages of finding an engagement ring. My girlfriend and I will be going to Europe next May and I am planning on asking while we are there. I am wondering if there are any sites or stores that have a setup like blue nile where you can pick the center stone and the band and every thing but with colored stones instead of just diamonds. I feel that if I just got a pre-made ring it may not be as good as if I were able to choose the components separately. I have a budget of $3000-$4000 and I am looking for a ring with a ruby center stone and diamond accents. Will this budget be enough for a nice ring? Sorry for so many questions but as I said I am VERY new to all this.

welcome to pricescope....and particularly to the forum where those of us that love color congretate!

ruby: i am NOT even close to knowing much but there is ruby, then there is Ruby, then there is RUBY! there is something for every price range but top grade ruby goes for LOTS LOTS LOTS more. you can find something in your price range, just don't expect a world class stone, especially if that's your budget for stone, diamonds, and setting.

spend some time getting educated regarding what constitutes a great ruby and then check and see what you're willing to compromise.

i've been looking at ruby cabachons recently and thinking i might actually prefer one of those rather than a faceted ruby. that would save quite a bit of $$$. a cab with a diamond halo would be lovely....to me, anyway.

do a search here at pricescope and you'll find in some threads a participant named Vincent Pardieu. he's a ruby fan and has posted some good info.

some resources for rubies:

www.rwwise.com [very high end but he evaluates many of his stones and you can learn from what he says about his own stones]

good luck!

Also unless you have a very specific reason for getting a ruby I would look into red spinels. They look like rubies-- red red rubies and cost considerably less... although still are pricey.

Cherrypicked is also great for colored gems and they have a nice collection of spinels. I would also contact Wink at www.winkjones.com he has contacts with some very good colored gem sources.

This sounds like a perfect job for Wink.

www.winkjones.com

He can source the ruby and make the ring.
I have bought from him and he rocks!

Ruby E-rings can be absoulutely stunning. There is someone who has one here .. her ring is just gorgeous and I think that it very inspiring.

Rubies can be pricey, especailly if you find a really nice one, BUT so is any gemstone if you are really looking for a nice one.

Spinels are nice as well. but if you have your heart set on a ruby.. GO FOR IT... I am going to try to find a pic of MsFlutters ring and post it here for you.

Check out MSFlutters thread here

For all the specs.. and I am attaching 2 pictures of her ring. (Hope you do not mind Msflutter)

Here is another great picture from her engagement photos.. AHHHH THE WORLD OF COLOR!!!!

I would second Storm and if I had that kind of money, go to Wink and see what he can source. Wink made a beautiful grandmother''s pendant for me with a small ruby, rhodolite garnet, and tanzanite. The price was very reasonable and the stones beautiful.

I love gemstones and I think that it is very special that you are considering getting your to-be a gemstone ring for your engagement, especially ruby, the queen of the gemstones!

Well, after a little more research I am expanding my options to include red spinel. From some of the comments posted on this forum and looking around the internet a little more I feel I really wouldn''t be compromising by buying a red spinel instead or a ruby. This isn''t to say I have moved away from the idea of a ruby just allowing myself a few more options. Is there is anything I should now about red spinel or any suggestions you may have I would love to hear them. Thanks for your time.

Hi, jnickell:

I think it''s great that you''re adding spinel to your options. While really fine ones aren''t cheap, they are certainly more affordable than equivalent quality rubies, which can be crazy expensive. One thing I really like about spinels is that they are always untreated.

National Gemstones'' GemForcaster News Letters are a great source of info on gemstones. Here''s a link to an article on spinel: http://www.preciousgemstones.com/gfsummerone.html#Burma%20Spinel

It''s an old one (1995), but still interesting.

They have a couple of beautiful stones for sale, but unfortunately I can''t unload them here.

Here''s a link to a top-of-the-line one at CherryPicked: http://www.cherrypicked.com/Gallery/Score.aspx?ItemID=1942

Have fun!

I see that Richard Wise has a few nice rubies for sale on his web site.

Maybe one of these will work out for you.

Great minds think alike, Gene. I was JUST NOW thinking exactly the same thing!!!

On the other hand, here''s a pretty ruby from Cherry Picked that isn''t too expensive. It''s not the red red color, but very beautiful nonetheless:

portoar: I''ve lusted over this stone for the longest time....ruby ECs are few and far between...

Isn''t it incredible??

If I had the funds and could find the size and color I wanted in my price range id get a lightly heated ruby over a spinel just because its a ruby.
There is nothing wrong with spinel they can be awesome but it isnt ruby... If $$ was an issue then id have no problem going with it but if I could afford it id get ruby.

I really like emerald cut ruby from cherrypicked (http://www.cherrypicked.com/Gallery/Score.aspx?ItemID=1856) but I''m not sure if I should wait and look around some more. I really started this whole process rather early so I have plenty of time to get something done but would hate to pass on this one and not find one I like later. Another thing, I have seen a lot of places will only mount a stone if you buy it from them. Will I have trouble finding a jeweler to mount this stone if I get it? Thanks again for all your help

yum. that ruby''s color reminds me of pomegranate! I''m thinking either a halo or trapezoid side stones?

You shouldn''t have trouble finding someone to mount it.

Well Widget, it''s only $3800! I don''t have that kind of money to spend on a gorgeous ruby but I''d love it if you did!

I think that cherrypicked stone is beautiful!! I usually don''t even look at that website because they are beyond my price range, but you may notice that many of their stones do get sold out. So if you keep looking you may find another stone you like even better, or you may not. Others may better answer the question if there are better "deals" out there. It''s my impression that there are fewer rubies of fine quality in that size range than diamonds of equivalent quality in that size...

Nothing against spinels, but to me there is something different getting a ruby vs a spinel. However I think what other people are saying is that ruby, especially in larger sizes may be actually MORE expensive than diamonds (and I think 1 carat ruby will be slightly smaller than a 1 carat diamond), so you are not necessarily going to get a bigger "bang for your buck" getting a ruby.

I think it''s great that you are looking for a ruby for your E-ring, instead of a diamond. While it''s true that very fine ruby will cost more than diamond, I don''t think it was your intent to go with a ruby to save money, but to have something unique and differnet. I am seeing more people each year move away from the common diamond into a more rare and unique gemstone. Once you explore and find out how truely overpriced diamonds are compared to much rarer gemstones, you will be glad you bought something different.
The fun is in the hunt, you have plenty of time so take your time, learn, explore and have fun doing it.

I agree that spinels are the way to go, you get more for your money and many times an untreated stone versus a treated stone. I really wanted a ruby, even knowing it would be more $$$$ than a diamond. I am the third generation of ruby ering wearers and regardless of knowing how great spinels are, I wanted a ruby. I looked on cherry picked and saw some great stones, but ended up working with a gem dealer outside of Chicago who found my beautiful stone!

Best of luck finding what you are looking for! Has she expressed interest in ruby? Maybe you could have her help. It was so fantastic for me to participate in the process of creating my ring! it really was the first large purchase we participated in together!

Here Here!!! I agree with you Gene 100%!!!

I love love love the cherrypicked one. What a unique shape!!!!
