Hey all,

This is my first post here so please let me know if this is not allowed and feel free to delete, but I was looking for a loose Ruby for an engagement ring and finally came across this amazing one from Gary at Finewater Gems. I actually found his site through this forum with some amazing reviews. He has a very beautiful pear cut ruby, unheated and over a carat that is exactly what I’ve been looking for, I have on hold as of now because I am looking for a setting! What are your thoughts on this ruby going in an engagement ring for my wife to wear forever, any concerns? Is it a steal being priced under $5k?

Also, would anyone have a recommendation for a jeweler to put my loose stone into a setting. I would like a halo type like the one attached. 69320C7B-369C-41AC-B594-59A6BAD22B03.jpeg

I have several stones from Gary and I love them all! I think he is a stand up guy and I really vibe with him and how he cuts and his inventory.

I think the ruby will look great with that setting.

First, I love how you said "for my wife to wear forever."

Second, I have no concerns whatsoever about setting a ruby in a ring for daily wear, especially one as clean as this. Third, Gary is a trusted vendor. Fourth, this is a beautiful gem! So if it has everything you're looking for, I say go for it!!

what a beautiful colour
red, the colour of everlasting love
the setting you like will still look as beautiful in 50 years as it does today

(although im a 1980's relic and would go for a wider band ;)2 )

Love Gary! Love the stone! GO FOR IT :)

I think it's lovely. It definitely leans more purple, but that isn't bad, it just..is!

I personally prefer purple-leaning rubies - almost like raspberry-red instead of fire engine red

the cut is also beautiful, as i find many pear shaped colored stones can look funky with lots of concentration of color towards the tip..but that isn't the case with this stone

Hello, I once purchased a red spinel from Gary and was disappointed with the color. It did not look even get close to what the studio shot suggested. I found the color description misleading, especially after having seen significantly better stones at a fraction of the price. He is a US vendor and you should expect to pay a material premium vs Asian dealer, it’s just a fact. That said, his return policy is spotless, so there was absolutely no problem and we parted ways in good terms. He was very friendly and responsive, so I can only confirm the very good reviews.

My point: this ruby is likely to look more like the second handshot you posted, and that’s not a fine ruby color to be. It’s a matter of taste, of course, but for 5k you can get a much better red spinel.

Now, you seem very excited about this ruby, but I sense you have no experience in colored stones. You could give it a try but don’t expect an extra fine ruby at 4.2k/carat. I don’t mean to discourage you, but rubies are either meh or prohibitively expensive. Red spinel soared in price in recent years but is still relatively affordable.

Good luck and please keep us posted!!

Sorry for the late reply everyone I had not seen any notifications!

I actually ended up going with Inken who I found through this site and chose a .59c unheated Burmese Ruby. We have worked on an awesome ring design and I’m super excited to get my hands on it!
