This question is as far removed from the topic of diamonds as possible, but here goes. I need a new rug shampooer asap. My old Bissell is thirteen or fourteen years old and it''s just not doing the job anymore. I have to work much to hard to get the dirty water up and out of the carpet again. Does anyone love their rug shampooer?? I''d like one that will basically lift the carpet off the floor with it''s suction power. I have a contractor husband with big dirty boots who is also a weekend competitive fisherman and two dogs who love being outside. I need something that''s really going to clean well and preferably with hot water. I don''t want a rug cleaning service (as many friends have suggested), I need to be able to drag this thing out of the closet as often as I need to. Thanks!

I think you can buy reconditioned Rug Doctors if I remember rightly, so that might be worth looking into - LOVE those things! Only trouble is, they are a bit cumbersome, but it might be just the thing for you.

Here you go, link - http://buy.rugdoctor.com/tabid/11/Default.aspx

I also think Rug Doctors do a great job. They are cheap to rent if you only plan on cleaning your carpets a few times a year I would just go that route.

I just bought a hoover. I don't know the exact model, but it was about 200 bucks from walmart, so it isn't top of the line, but it seems to work well. I'm not dealing with anything as dirty as you, or using it as often, so you might want to step up a model.

I did a fair bit of research, and found the hoovers seemed to get better ratings than the bissells--at least in the range I was looking at (shaped like an upright vacuum, around $200 bucks), though my parents have an older canister type bissell they love. Apparently the little portable handheld ones are pretty worthless, unfortunately--I'd considered one for quick spot cleaning.

I used amazon.com for reviews, and then bought locally.

ETA: mine doesn't heat the water, you just add hot. I looked at some with that feature, but they were alot more expensive, I think.

Careful if you rent a rug doctor that ALL the water has been emptied previously to you getting it and the machine is cleaned (mind you I checked the machine but it must have been somewhere I missed). I used one for the first time and it looks like the person before did not clean the machine properly and as a consequence my carpet (thanks god it is OLD) is completely smegged it has a nasty smell that I can''t get out of it. We re-cleaned the carpet like 3 times after that, used baking powder deodorizer and while it is better the smell is still there
