Fun fact:
The earliest diamond engagement ring was presented in the latter half of the 15th century by King Maximilian I of Austria to Mary of Burgundy. He made her a point cut diamond ring at her father's insistence.

The practice itself is much older than this article would have you believe.
*Lot of misinformation. Like Eugenie's pad being twenty carats? No. More like, 4 maybe?
Fancy colored diamonds have always been in early rotation, whether they be table cut, point, singles, mazarin, rose, omc, oec etc... They weren't however used to signify love matches as often as CS/pearl, or for the populace, until DeBeers pushed them.

So, it's really just what was old is new again.

Here are some white early mix point/table diamonds with tarnished silver foil backing for Queen Jane. (England/Tudor period)
