So FI''s friend jokingly told us that we should send out Sparklers for our Save the Date since we''re getting married on the 4th of July. As chessy as it sounds, I like the idea and think it would be fun to do. What do you think? Does anyone know if you can mail sparklers?

Er, I don''t think you can mail explosives/anything that ignites but I may be wrong. Very cute idea, though...wonder if you could do "mock" sparklers, or maybe the sparkler box with the actual Save the Date info folded up inside?

Hi there,

Congratulations on setting a date! I also don''t think you can send sparklers through the mail. Since I don''t have any spectacular ideas, I''m going to sit back and wait for DKS to chime in...I''m sure she''ll have some "spectacularly sparkling" ideas!

Gee whiz...under some pressure here...I will have to sleep on this one. (I mean stay awake all night with a silly thinking hat...actually it is a bucket. Amazing what you can come up with while wearing a bucket on your head.)

DKS

Hee hee hee...sorry for the recruitment up there, DKS, but I seem to be brain-dead these days...I think the pressure''s getting to me, so of course my mind heads out first and I am of no use to anyone here! I figure you''re good at these kind of things, so wanted to make sure you got in on it...

Actually, if you hadn''t noticed this thread, I would''ve put a warrant out for your reply sometime tomorrow!

You always make me chuckle, so can''t wait to hear what you come up with! No pressure, hon, none at all...we''ll all be here waiting patiently for your bucket-thinking, mind-blowing ideas!

Love ya, DKS!

P.S. So, my diamond twin, how''s that door knob setting coming along???

I''m almost positive you can''t mail sparklers, though it''s a cute idea.

Ok, regretfully I failed. Bombed. Got nothing. NOT even a smidgen of an idea. LOSER I am.

The sparklers are only allowed to be GROUND shipped. Yes, you could sneak them in the post...but there are sorting machines and there is friction and you could be responsible for a tremendous amount of damage...not to mention a possible federal crime. That means THE BIG BIG house. Time outside in the sun...on a rock pile. Eh...doesn''t sound so good to me either.

Then I moved on to a firecracker. Same thing. You could place it in a puff ball of cotton and a hard box...but now your creative idea is going to cost you at least $4.20 to post. And again we are talking about gun powder here.

So then I tried to think of how your save the date could be rolled up and made to look like a firecracker...shipped in a small tube...but neh...no good either.

I went to a ton of novelty sites...party sites everything looks so cheesy. You need something that the cost is minimal...and the shipping isn''t exorbitant.

Can you share more of your vision for what you hope the day will look like? Are we talking a casual picnic atmosphere filled with the normal 4th activities and food? Or is it more formal, and just a great day to try to get everyone to attend?

I am sorry I wasn''t able to help with your idea...but I did find several sites that offer sparklers for party favors. They also offer personalized matches to lite. I think that would be great to have for the rice throwing event. Just handout sparklers. Outside of course. So there is still room for them in your celebration. "without making a federal case out of it!!"

Please fill us in on more details...I have a cutie. ...but I want to hear more before I spill it.

harleigh...I am sorry I let you down.

And here I''ve been waiting all day for your grand idea...what a bummer!

Just joshin'' you! I love your posts, whether they have grandiose ideas or are just worth a chuckle or two, and the above had both, so thanks!

You''re just the best, and you could never let me down...well, unless, of course, you actually one day just stopped posting, for no reason whatsoever...I''d be just devastated. So, if that happened, I''d just have to hunt you down, my diamond twinkie, and make you POST, POST, POST until you learned your lesson (think of that as an equivalent to a good spanking!) Now that you''ve learned your lesson, (yeah, right!) get back to posting so I can have a few more chuckles while I sit here, still at school, grinding out Progress Report after Progress Report, that alas, must be sent home by tomorrow!

I am running a wee bit behind these days...must be all my time spent on PS, so you''d better hurry up and make some posts that are worth my while!

Love ya, DKS!

Kiss Kiss Harleigh...back at cha! I heart my Harleigh Twinkie too. Now, Get busy! Focus. Focus.

You could probably make fake ones by dipping sticks into plaster of paris, or....if you want them to look like they are ignited, get a bunch of different colored metallic ribbon (silver, gold, and rose gold colors) and cut it into strips. Mix them up and find a way to connect them to the stick.

Obviously, I''ve got nothing too.

LOL DKS...mwaaahhh to you! I had to race home to shut all my windows...it just started storming out of the blue here in sunny Northern CA! Thunder, lightning, hail and rain! Yikes! At least I finished those dreaded Progress Reports...

On another note, sap483, so sorry for the threadjack to pick on DKS. So now, I figure I own you some assistance!

luckystar's post gave me a wacky idea...it may be totally out there, but here goes nothin'...

Have you ever used Plaster of Paris in candy, soap or craft molds? I do this all the time in my classroom and make the kids ornaments, little figurines, letters, etc... You could make little firecracker Plaster of Paris molds with a little silver or gold metallic spray of something coming out the top (I'm thinking Christmas tinsel here) that you would stick into it wet and have it dry into the mold. This would be flat on the back, leaving room for info, but the trick would be to find some big enough to put a label on the front of it with all of your information.

Though time consuming, you could then paint them bright red and affix a pre-made clear address label (they sell them at office supply stores or Sam's Club, Costco, etc...) with all of your information on it. You could put them on the firecracker with "Save the Date for a 'blast' of a wedding on July 4, 2008" or whatever floats your boat. You would then need to seal them with glossy (not matte!) finish Mod Podge, available at any craft store or Wal-Mart to then seal your little treasure.

I didn't find any molds of sparklers or firecrackers yet, but I did find some patriotic ones that you might be able to do SOMETHING with...

Flag

I'll post this for now and keep on looking...sorry we couldn't be of more assistance! (Hey, just think, at least I didn't tell you to make something out of a toilet paper tube...that's what we'd use at school, and just think how lightweight that would be to mail!)

Wow- I had never thought of making fake firecrackers/sparklers. What a great idea! I''m not super creative when it comes to making things like that though, do you think a novice could handle it? As for the ambiance of the wedding- it''s set on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The reception is in a tent that connects to a chalet style building. It''s at the Castle Hill Inn and Resort in Newport (the website has some nice pictures so you can see what it''s like). I think it''s going to be on the more formal side, but definitely not to the level of black tie. The wedding planner there indicated that they have an amazing view of the fireworks from three surrounding towns- however we don''t know yet what nights the fireworks will be held on. I''ve always loved fireworks soo much (in fact my grandparents used to own a fireworks business). So I''m really excited to incorporate that into my day. With it being on the 4th, I feel like I can do that without it being over the top, you know? Having sparklers instead of rice is a wonderful idea! It''s an evening ceremony too, so that will look lovely in pictures! I hope this helps! Thank you so much for the feedback already, please keep it coming!!!

Here''s a seller on ebay who is selling a "lot" of candy molds...the auction states she has 4th of July ones, so you could contact her and ask her what they are and for a picture.

Here is a link.

And yes, even an amateur crafter can do these, but I also think you could be really creative and think of something nice to reflect your theme of elegance and fun at the same time. I''ll keep looking...

Please make sure if you use this idea that your dress or anyone else''s does not become ignited by the embers falling to the ground (or onto dress trains, etc.) Obviously you''re aware of fireworks/firecrackers hazards since your grandparents were in the biz at one time...perhaps I''m stating the obvious...I''m not afraid of fire but have a tremendous respect for it as I''m sure you do, so please be careful, don''t want your lovely dress full of burn holes or anything!

Here is a link to sparklers for wedding favors...and a photo Sparkler used instead of rice.

I read somewhere last night, that you can actually add paint to sparklers and change the color of the sparkle. Specific paint...but if you wanted a red glow instead of white...you can! I think this sites prices are a tad silly priced on somethings. And I bet you know where to order sparklers wholesale and rebundle them in small tied groupings to save money. You can use the site to see how they are presented.

But this site has some AWESOME favors. I mean really cool stuff. One can always build on their ideas.

(I had your gathering pictured like a picnic...watermelon and American Flags, glad you gave more direction. I guess a rubber duck with an American Flag is out of the question? As in wanted to get all my ducks in a row...and let you know, I ''m gonna to wed my Beau...sorta a Duck wrap!!) agh...Sometimes the bucket backfires.

Ok ok ok...quack quack. I will waddle back to the drawing board. AFLAC!!!

I''m starting to think that maybe I should give out sparklers as the favor. I really loved how on that site they have the set with the personalized matches and three sparklers tied together with a pretty ribbon. I''m sure I could make it myself even cheaper than that- though I would have to order the matches from someone, but I can''t imagine they would be that expensive. Hmmm....thank you for that site, it really does provide some inspiration. On a different note, I''m trying to pick colors. What do you girls think- green (to kind of bring in the color of the surroundings- I think I''d want to use fruits like limes and green apples in my decor) and white or light blue and white or a combination of the blue, green and white?
