Hi all....another newbie here. My FI and I have been in the depths of ring shopping since January. We started out at the typical B&M stores and quickly learned that wasn''t for us. We are both the type who like to educate ourselves for purchases (I guess you can say we hate to feel dumb). That''s how I found PS! And boy have we gotten educated.
We decided to go through the man who made FI''s brother''s wife''s ring. Met with him a few times, looked at a few stones, and made a plan for what was supposed to be a custom job. Well 3 days later when we got a call the setting was done we felt something was fishy...that seemed WAY too fast based on our research. But we went with it. Another 2-3 days later well what do you know...*the* perfect stone for us happened across his desk. We went to look at the ring with the stone in it and we liked it, but we were not going to buy until we had more info. When we saw the GIA report it listed the diamond as an I. We had been very clear that we did not want any color below G. The diamond also seemed too deep (based on my research) for our liking. We had been very specific that we wanted an ideal cut diamond. Long story short we walked away. He didn''t listen to the two things that were most important to us and was likely trying to sell us a diamond he had in stock.
We were back to square one. That''s when someone local (or several someones) recommended a local guy who does only custom work and who worked formerly for GIA. We met with him and instantly felt good. Let the record show I am VERY picky about what I want (thanks PS for giving me so many ideas) and I finally felt like this person was listening to me. We are building an oval halo ring - but it''s important to me to have a significant halo/shank as most of the ones I''ve tried on have felt too dainty. I realize I''m the minority here and that most women want a dainty 1mm shank - but I''m a triathlete and in the last year I''ve had a broken foot, black eye, and broken toe. I don''t do dainty.
So we picked out a gorgeous 1.25 ct ideal cut Oval - color G, VS1. It''s delightful! So today I was able to see the metal that will be my ring. It was an amazing experience. The metal was raw and unpolished. No sparkle yet. But he wanted to make sure he had the proportions of the halo/shank right. He actually went a little too big at 4.5mm...but we are cutting it down to 3.5mm which I think will be perfect.
For those interested we are rebuilding this Henri Daussi ring only with an oval stone. I think it will look amazing. Very low profile (important to a non-dainty girl), very classic look (I adore the vintage feel of the ovals).
Sorry this is so long. Has anyone else gotten to see their ring in the early stages? How long should it take from here? I think I will appreciate the art that is jewelry making so much more now that i have seen the metal in its infant stage. AMAZING!
