Hi all,

So I got a lovely stone and it's got a scratch. I imagine this happens all the time to others and am curious how you handle it. If it's small do you just keep it and forget it or do you really try and get it repolished ? For me even it's small and on a relatively inexpensive stone it really REALLY bothers me! Like I just cannot forget it's there

I'm not sure how much it would cost to repolish but would love to know! I live in sg and if you have any tips on where one can go for this, do let me know too:)

Looking forward to your thoughts !

See if you can spot it, its very hard to photograph! It's on the top right corner

No help sorry but do you know how you scratched it?

I'm one of those weirdos who holds my stones up to the light in funny angles to look for scratches. Don't know why I do it but I do!

Got scratched during setting:(
I told myself it's alright but it's still bothers me.

Yes I totally do that too with all my stones... .. it's like going looking for trouble!

Oh, no! :confused2: I wish I could help by offering some good advice but I've never had a stone buffed out. I'm actually pretty tough on my rings so they are bound to show some wear. Every time I knock a ring against something, I check it out and apologize to it (don't pretend you've never apologized to an inanimate object before :lol-2:). Thankfully, I haven't had any major incidents yet.

There is an Eastern aesthetic of beauty in imperfection. A Zen monk rakes the gravel in perfectly striped patterns around the rocks. Then, when everything is finished, he shakes the tree and causes a single leaf to fall, ruining the pattern. It's a reminder that everything changes. Looking at your beautiful stone, so green and springlike, I would embrace the reminder of a single fallen leaf. Be well!

Awesome post, MissyBeaucoup! This is so true, everything is always changing and jewels WILL show wear. I have one antique ring with sapphires that show the wear. They are beautiful to me in part because of that.

You have to remove the stone from the setting to get it rebuffed and dimensions may change. I have a small crown ring with 3 rubies. 1 of them got scratched while setting as there was some silk near the surface and I guess it's softer at that portion. I stopped noticing after a while and it is a small stone. It did bug me initially.

I would be more bothered by the fact that it was set asymmetrically than by the scratch, but the scratch would be easy for a lapidarist to remove. It would have to be removed from the setting, but if it were me, I would require it to be shifted in the setting anyway.

Hahaha Elle that's so hilarious and true. My husband calls my gems " your babies" so you can imagine how inanimate they are to me!

Absolutely right and I really love this thought. Everything is changing and it's important to embrace that. They are going to show wear at some point unless we just never wear them!

Burmesedaze, I guess I could get it rebuffed at some point. Do you know a good lapidary in DG or know who I can ask?

About your ring, it's good to know I'm not alone in this and maybe in some time it won't bother me. Just thought I'd give it a shot because I get some much great eye opening advice from this forum :)

@Tourmaline , is it asymmetric?! I didn't realise. Could you advice which of the prongs is not in place? I could get it corrected then

If it's not an expensive some i really wouldn't bother. Nope no idea but you can check during the gem fair and ask around :)

It is set rotated so the facets are not in line with the prongs.

That is a perfect way to see it! Life is change and disorder.
