Hi everyone,

I am just wondering if anyone noticed any tiny scratches on their platinum setting when they received it from the jeweler (brand new)? Particularly around the prong...

It looks like it happened when they were setting the center stone (trying to fit it in the prongs). Should they have been polished out better or does this normally happen?

If you did notice any, did you think it was a big problem or did you just play it off as "pickyness"?

Thanks!

My e-ring has some of those for when they fixed the prongs. They are minor and honestly I don''t know how to fix them and haven''t bothered to ask. I don''t think they damage the setting, but I am sure there is a way to polish them out or something.

*M*

Thanks poptart! I wish I was less paranoid...

Did anyone else have any experience with this?

Maybe some setting experts could chime in....??

There are many levels of workmanship At the top are those who finish things virtually to perfection. Most times these folks get a very large permium for their product as it represents many extra minutes or hours of tedious labor.

At the other extreme is unsatisfactory junk jewelry where workmanship is virtually non-existent.

In between is the area where most jewelry quality exists. You can have scratches removed, but it is nicer when they just are not there to begin with. If the price was right and you didn''t look or notice them, then it may be that your ring is "good enough" for many people. Possibly, it needs to be improved to please your particular taste. It may not be material to the security of the diamond, but if you are distrubed by seeing these "problems" then it probably is not your imagination.

Ask for the correction you think you need and see if the jeweler accomodates you. I hope it works out okay. If it doesn''t, there are always retailers and craftsmen waiting to fix a problem and to make you their customer for future purchases.

Thanks for the explanation!

So if most jewelers fit somewhere in the middle, is it fairly commen to have tiny nicks, etc? Ladies, upon very careful examination (you looked really, really close) of your prongs/settings, did you notice these tiny/scratches from where the center stone was set (kinda on the inside edges...)?

Sunnyplay,

I looked at mine really closely just now and even after several months of wear, I still don''t see any scratches on my prongs. I can see some slight scratches on the bottom of my ring though (I''m pretty rough with it.) If it bothers you, I''d have the jeweler fix it. You deserve to receive a brand new looking ring since that is what you purchased.

Thanks for the responses everyone! No, I''m not sure if the insides of the prongs were polished out or not...
On the inside edges, it looks almost like a few tiny leftover scratches from where the inside of the prongs were shaved down a tad to make the center stone fit...does that make sense? So it is not on the outside of the head, but on the inside of the "v" of the prongs.

Could this be easily polished out by a local jeweler while I wait (it would probably cost the same as having it shipped back...)

Maybe I should just not worry about it so much...

Well from that link I posted, it is saying that many rings are not polished beneath the prongs. I would say it is nothing to worry about, it is just an aesthetic thing which some people prefer but many probably never are aware off. It is just a finishing touch. I would say put it like this, Mr Smith may not have this done, but if a member of the Royal family were having a ring made it would probably be finished off to a high polish on every 1000th mm surface.

You are probably right pyramid. I mean, it is noticable when I look very closely, but no one else will probably notice. I just have to see if it really bothers me or not...

Does anyone know if a local jeweler can polish this out easily?

Well did you notice what Dimonbob said in the link I sent you, he is from Whiteflash one of the respected vendors mentioned on this board, so I would go with that, he said it was not easy but worth the money. Any jeweller with a bench person should be able to do it. I think the stone may need to be unmounted but I am not sure, maybe one of the experts will know here.

Here is the quote:

"Polishing the inside of a ring to a smooth bright shine is not usually done and is not easy or quick. In my opinion it is well worth $100. Of course, not everyone is a picky as I am.
