Hi everyone!

My good friend is looking to purchase an approximate 1.5 ct cushion cut diamond for his wife as a graduation gift for obtaining her masters degree. He has a budget of 5-7k (we know it limits the search greatly.) He would like no obvious carbon. If any of you diamond experts and prosumers have any free time to help, that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I think depending some additional factors, he might be able to find something in that price range.
1. What kind of cushion cut are you looking for (modified brilliant, crushed ice, antique, brilliant...etc)
2. How low is he willing to go on color
3. How does he feel about fluorescence?

Hi again. So he has found 2 cushion diamonds both 1.52 cts, both G color and SI1. The only differences is the slightly cheaper one has a depth of 70% and the $600 more one has a 68.5% depth. I don't want to post links and have them poached. Any advice from those familiar with this cut of diamond? Thanks so much!

Also, the price point he is at is 7-7600 between them. If anybody feels inclined to find a beautiful one I can send him he's ready to pull the trigger. Thanks!

Cushions are hard to judge by numbers. Does she want a crushed ice or defined pattern?

FWIW, there is nothing on Blue Nile that is a nice looking cut with that size, in that budget, to my eye. Or James Allen.

I’m not an expert but this one looks pretty. Too bad it’s an SI2…

If they are on-line, he needs to put them on hold and provide the links.

Assuming the diamonds he’s looking at are modified brilliants (crushed ice look which is most common), I would just want to be able to see the light performance in a video if possible to make sure there’s no obvious dark areas where the light isn’t being reflected back to the eye. The general rule of thumb with cushion cuts is to keep the table between 55-65% and the depth between 61-68%. If he wants to maximize size, he could even look in the 1.4ct range and find a diamond with a “thin-medium” or “medium” girdle and have it face up similarly to a 1.5ct with a “very thick” girdle.
