I have a question about selling a pendant I own made up entirely of argyle pink diamonds. I was wondering if using an auction house would be a safer way of selling it rather than trying to do so on my own. I have never sold a piece this way and would like to hear as many opinions as possible. Pros vs cons. Whadda you all think?
Stats are as follows: Center stone is .10 ct VS clarity, the remaining stones add up to 2.18 ct, VS clarity.
Thanks for your help!

Pros: They have experience, at least some of them do. They'll ask the right questions and do the ad properly.

Cons: The fees. Depending on the auction you use it can be a little slow.

First thing is to find out a reasonable and achievable selling price.
Is it a designer named piece?
Keep in mind you can’t expect retail and while it contains pink diamonds it’s the ones that are Arygle and with a lab report that matter. Some pink diamonds are treated to create pink. Buyers are aware of this so won’t pay a premium without reports.
The benefits of auction is its safe and easy for the seller. It can also be the quickest provided the auction happens in the not to distant future and the agreed reserve price is met. Choosing the right auction house, one known for fine jewellery and having a “world wide” presence and service ie international bidders welcomed and shipping arranged no problem, can result in the best price.
Cons are basically the fees, often around 20 to 25% AND the buyer likewise pays a similar commission.
Also, depends who is there on the day.
I once saw on eBay an item sell for $6,000 one week and then 10 days later relisted. Apparently due to a non paying buyer (I had been in contact with the seller and they were pretty upset that the sale fell through and they had to go through the whole “non paying bidder process”).
Second auction it sold for $11,000 odd.
Huh and yep.
Another option is selling on consignment, this again relies on the vendor having a strong and well supported presence and buyer network. Sometimes they buy up front, other times they take a % of price. Such vendors often have own websites and/or use sites like Etsy, Instagram and eBay.
I wouldn’t recommend selling as a novice on eBay. The fees are cheaper but it’s a complicated world out there.
