Hello,

I have a very different question to ask, recently me and my friend bought some loose gemstones later we gave it to hallmark for certification. We came to know that one of the ruby was pale so didnt worth much, other two were £550 each. Hallmark also gave us a certificate for the evaluation. They also took a lot of time in evaluation. As I am in United Kingdom, I don''t know where to sell this loose gemstones. Now I am stucked with these gemstones as I thought that I will sell these gemstones and pay my university fees. But I dont have any idea about where to sell the loose gemstones. I was reading about the all the replies and all of them are useful but about United States and Canada.

I am thinking to sell the sapphire, can any one please guide me in the right direction. Where to sell these loose gemstones

Unfortunately just because a stone has been appraised at a certain value, this doesn't mean that you will be able to realise anything like that price on the open market.

Who exactly are Hallmark? There are certificates and certificates - it needs to be backed up by a reputable name. The only labs in the UK that certify loose gemstones that I would trust 100% are Holts in London, there was a trade-only one run by the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) which is currently closed and I think one in Birmingham called Anchorcert (although I know nothing about them). There may be others - LD, you may know of some.

Was the evaluation for insurance, retail replacement or what exactly - there can be a big difference.

Other jewellers will be buying stones at wholesale prices from their own dealers and will have probably paid about the same as you have, so they almost certainly won't be interested unless you are selling at that price.

With the general public, you would be trying to sell a stone with no reputation or background behind you to give people confidence. Do you know enough about the stones to be able to represent them properly? Did the place that gave you the certificates run proper tests or just have a good look at them (how much did they charge you for the appraisals)?

To be perfectly honest I would try ebay and hope to get somewhere around 50% of what you were told they were worth.

Sorry not to be more optimistic, but that is the reality I'm afraid.
