Fellow PSers-
I received a beautiful orangey-pink topaz for my birthday last week. (maybe Imperial? Not sure it''s quite that... fancy. I don''t know really, but it''s gorgeous and I don''t care.) Anyway, it''s 5.2 cts, cushion cut (rectangular rather than square) with a checkerboard top, and it''s in a very plain 4-prong YG SUPER-HIGH setting right now, that I can''t stand. I''m wanting to do something horizontally set, not too high up, and in WG. It was bought in St. Thomas so I''d like something perhaps sort of less formal or stately appearing, and maybe more unique, tropical even (if that makes sense.) I don''t want to spend lots of money having it reset, so I don''t intend to use any sidestones or pave, just good old (white!) gold. My jeweler here in town who made my e-ring is doing it, but I don''t yet know what I want. Oh, I''d like to not use a bezel set since the stone really looks better with a lot of light coming in through the bottom, something pretty open would be good. Maybe double prongs?

Any suggestions, pictures of other things (I''ve looked everywhere and having a hard time finding a horizontal setting with a cushion cut this large), or whatever else you can come up with would be great. I have to tell the jeweler something soon but I haven''t seen anything yet I liked!

Thanks so much... I promise to put up pics of the finished product.

Hi!

Orangy-pink sure sounds like imperial to me!

Your description sounds sorta like my topaz ring. I had this mounted years ago. I had originallly wanted no diamonds, but the Jeweler talked me into adding some. I actually think it would have looked fine without any...

The stone is bezel set on the ends, but it still gets lots of light.

Is this anything like you''re thinking of?

Widget-

Beautiful ring! The stone does look similar in color to mine, although I''m still not sure it''s an Imperial topaz, possibly something enhanced? Anyway...

I like the design of your ring, but I am looking for something a bit more swirly, so to speak. And using quite a bit less gold (this needs to stay low on the price). But I really do like how the bezels on both ends still allow lots of light in, I hadn''t considered that possibility yet.

Thanks!

Light weight is not going to save allot of cash, most of the cost is in the labor, with custom ring... Besides, these bezel rings need not be all that heavy - it is more of a design challenge to keep them light and wearable. Let the jeweler worry about that

About open bezels - sure they are nice! Here's One version I'd rather prefer w/o the channel set diamonds. And there are others by the same designer. I don't think such settings would be available in the right size, but a good design idea can't hurt.

This one below seems to keep some of the modern flair of Widget's ring - in a more airy form. And I can easily imagine a cushion set E-W in liew of that 30 cts aquamarine.

Perhaps the least costly option would be to find a setting in a catalog and have you stone set in it with minimal modification. I can't know if your stone would fit in any such setting, but a jeweler offering such 'catalog settings' would know. Some of these catalogs of semi-finished jewelry and parts are online. Try Adwar.com for example. There must be others.

In the meantime though - a version of THIS

sounds pretty darn perfect, by look and most likely, by cost.

Just an idea.
