Hi everyone

Would love your thoughts on the setting of a tanzanite I bought for my girlfriend as an engagement ring. I'm a bit worried the the stone depth (6.2mm) is going to be a difficult factor in creating this ring.

The ring design I'd love to have is also below - obviously the centre diamond will be replaced with the tanzanite stone. This design is originally a Bez Ambar creation > "54 pave-set diamonds in knife-edge style around the bezel and 22 pave set diamonds going half way down the top of the 2.0 mm wide shank"

I will really appreciate it if you guys gave some feedback - especially around the setting of a tanzanite in this type of style, having the depth it has. Any knowledgeable input will be appreciated!!

Thank you!

Chris

The stone depth won't be an issue if the setting is being custom-made for the stone. I would be concerned about the open gallery, however, especially if she plans to wear it with a wedding ring. Tanzanite is a relatively soft stone and wearing it with a wedding ring could result in a groove being worn into the pavilion facets, especially if she gets a diamond wedding ring. You could either have a basket added to the ring or just make sure to get a really low-profile wedding band.

Hi there

Thanks for your feedback :-)

I also thought about that, as my mother warned be about two rings wearing off against each other.

She wants a baguette type of eternity ring to pair as a wedding band, and I think due to the stone being raised quite high by the gallery, there would be sufficient space underneath for the eternity ring to slot in without wearing against the top pavilion stones (if that makes sense).

What do you think? I believe the eternity band is quite low profile enough for its height not to make an impact? Something like this below:

Do you have any other pictures of the tanzanite's profile? The fingers are in the way of my being able to see where the girdle is so I cannot make out how much of the depth is in the pavilion and how much is the crown. Overall, I think the depth will not be much of an issue due to the custom setting but I am still curious about the tanzanite. Tanzanite isn't a ring stone, much less an engagement ring stone, so please let her know that it must be worn with care and removed for most activities.

I'll try and upload some pictures so that you guys can have a look - that's the only one I have available currently.

Yes, she is quite aware of its nature. She has quite big hands / elongated fingers and she technically told me "rather get a tanzanite that is a bigger stone that looks better on my finger". A diamond equivalent I couldn't afford by a long shot!!
So I told her it is your choice, but I'm going to be on her case to remove it before any type of dangerous activity - the stone was still a pretty penny in any case!
