I'm 35 weeks pregnant, so I've been scrounging through my mother's jewelry from my dad (now divorced, so no sentimental attachment) that she gifted me for rings that will actually fit my hands right now! I have been wearing this ring with two (.25ish? ct) opals set with some diamonds it yellow gold. I love it, but I don't like wearing yellow gold. I think the whites in these gems would look great in a white gold. I'm also thinking that it looks a bit dated and I've been thinking about a new setting. Any suggestions? Do you think this ring is worth the trouble?

That's a LOVELY ring! I see what you mean by "dated" though ... I have a number of those myself  . The best way to make a decision about whether the ring is "technically" worth it, is to take it to a jeweler who you respect and have them look it over for an idea of its estimated value. Then, you and your sweetie will have to determine whether it's "sentimentally" worth it or not.

Since you've asked for our opinions, I vote "yes". If a jeweler believes that the stones are valuable enough to spend the money to have someone re-work them, then I'd go for it. I'd actually redesign the ring into a pair of earrings where the diamonds are set in a halo-like fashion around the opals. Given your upcoming bundle of blessings, every time I'd wear them, I'd think about my baby's time in my "tummy" and they would mean the world to me.

You could have the ring rhodium plated, and wear it that way until you decide what you'd like to do.

I like that idea! That way the OP can enjoy wearing it while she's thinking about what to do. I don't know a lot about opals, but if they can safely be dipped in rhodium I think you've got a great idea.

Roxy, after I posted I did think of that! From what I understand, opals are fragile and I'm not sure how they'd do with the dipping - I've had several pieces dipped but they were all diamond pieces...but it's worth asking a jeweler about!

You're right, a jeweler’s the best one to ask about this. Hopefully Chicnhed (I love her User Name  ) will let us know what her jeweler suggests because I really do think it’s a pretty ring!

I hadn't thought of earrings, that's a great idea. And you are right, wearing it will remind me of this pregnancy. I hadn't thought of that either =). Hopefully these opals are worth it, I think it would be neat.

Great, that'll be helpful to a lot of people, since many folks read the threads for research, but don't always have input, so much of what is written is for their benefit as well. I don't have opal, but I have pearls, so this info will help me with those rings as well.

I'm glad I gave you another option to consider, but whatever you decide, it'll be the perfect thing for you & your baby as a lasting memory. Thanks for letting us enjoy this with you & let us know what you ultimately decide to do!
