Hey guys, I have a question for you all. I am looking at 2 stones that are equal in color (I will probably get one as a gift). One is slightly under a carat and a cushion, the other is 1 ct and a pear. The pear faces up much larger.

So the problem, I love the shape of the cushion better, but I don''t mind the pear and it gives the look of a larger stone. The other issue is that I have a step cut version of this stone that is rectangle shaped and slightly smaller than the cushion.

What would you do in this situation?

I’d go for the slightly larger pear because you already have a stone of the same colour in almost the same shape and size. However, if you are planning to get a matched set in the future, then I’d go for the cushion.

You know, I was just thinking a matched set might be fun.

Keep in mind two magic little words that tell you pretty much everything there is to know when it comes to evaluating gems: overall beauty. This term describes collectively many aspects of appearance of a certain stone, and tells you how balanced those aspects are. So don''t look just color, cut and size, but also try to think about brilliance, about how this shape and cutting style work together with the color, is the outline visually pleasing and symmetrical, what kind of design would that stone work well with...? And when you''re done with all that, you''ll see how each stone rates in terms of overall beauty. Hope this helps.

It does. It helps confirm the decision I just made :-).

Thanks, but I went for the cushion. I sent the pic of my stone to Eric and he said they would be different in cut and color and that the pear really only fit for a pendant. I want a ring

. I started another thread, and you can see what I got. It was a hard choice.

I''m really happy that you got the one you really wanted because I have found for myself, in the past, that if I come to a decision as sort of a consolation prize or rationalizing it, I''m still wanting the thing I originally wanted afterwards (which usually causes me more grief). I''m glad you got your cushion
