Shipping Diamond/ Jewellery Internationally

I'm having a ring made in the USA by a vendor who won't ship internationally (no exeptions). Now I planned on having my aunt (based in the US) ship the ring for me to Europe. But she is in the hospital for covid19 and I don't feel this is something she will be able to do in the next few weeks and I really don't want anything to stress her in the next weeks.

Is there any company that will export/import my diamond ring for me for a fee. I've asked Malca Amit - they won't work with private consumers it seemed like. An appraiser told me he isn't familiar with shipping internationally. I even reached out to a smallish instagram vendor who ships internationally and offered her a 3x the shipping cost plus shipping to ship my ring to me. I also offered to pay for third party insurance. But it seems nobody wants to have anything do to with this.

Does anybody have experience with this? Maybe a concierge shipping service.

Perhaps you could try doing another post saying “Help needed please, need a kind US PSer to help ship a ring to me in the US”.
im in Australia and I’ve had a PSer help me with shipping.
Oh god when I didn’t think Pricescope couldn’t be any more helpful. What a unique idea. Maybe as a last resort I will ask. I really don’t want to bother anybody. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I’m interested as well.

Maybe a different appraiser? Or a vendor who maybe does consignment services since it’s not really that but it’s the closest I can think of?

That is a great suggestion. I just asked another vendor who has offered consignment services in the past - she also declined. Maybe I’ll just have to wait till COVID is under control and I’ll fly over to the US and get it personally (:

Can I ask who the vendor is?
The vendor is really the best person to handle this - they should have an insurance policy with FedEx that covers jewellery. I really can’t fathom why this vendor is making things needlessly difficult for you!
I‘m sure the reason that everyone else is refusing is liability if the shipping company does lose it... Can you give us an approximation of how much this ring will be worth when complete? (My assumption is that it’s quite a valuable piece, if you contacted Malta Amit)?

It’s EW. As a EU resident I was supposed to go through her London retailer. But my diamond was in the US so that didn’t make any sense sending it to London and back to the US - just so EW could set the diamond and then send it to London and then have the retailer send it to me. So I asked my aunt (in the US) to forward the package to me (which now isn’t an option anymore). Besides with no deal Brexit looming It would have to pass TWO customs so the London retailer really didn’t make any sense.
I did tell the vendors I would take all liability on myself and even insure the package with a third party insurer for shipments.
It’s not a crazy value (~ 3x.xxx), so maybe Malta Amit was the wrong address.

Sorry if I’m not understanding, but how does the vendor get their pieces to London?? They must have some set up to do that? Could you not get to London in person (not sure where you are)?

I don’t know how she gets her products to London. But she will only send it to an US address. No exceptions ;) She probably
has her reasons that I don’t know of, but it is a bit irritating!

It is! Most annoying.

If you are in the UK, I would honestly wait until January (or later), by which time your aunt will hopefully be back to full health. The post is truly terrible at the moment - took me 10 days to receive a small parcel sent first class within the UK. You might have seen the article on it in BBC news a couple of days ago - the volume of mail is simply unprecedented due to everyone Christmas shopping due to the Covid.

I would only have a kindly PSer to send it if you are genuinely willing to gamble on its loss. They would feel awful if anything went wrong, and with international shipping plus customs, there is plenty to go wrong at this time of year.

I would stick to a professional if not a trusted family member. You could try contacting some PS appraisers who offer escrow services to see if they would do it?

I'm based in Europe so not the UK. And I'm actually always surprised at how fast and efficient FedEx Express or DHL Express orders get from the US to my european country. So I haven't experienced any delays even with cheaper companies. What could go wrong during customs? I really trust the customs of my country that they don't steal anything. I mean they would loose their great state job for a "stupid" diamond ring. But thank you for warning me!

I did contact one PS appraiser and he also wasn't comfortable shipping internationally. I must be honest I don't get the hesistation. I really don't recommend the company ring concierge. but the order I placed with them was with me in 3 days and there was NO customs delay (even though it was a high priced item).
I will now look for Appraisers who explicity offer escrow services that is a great point you made. Thank you!

I think @denverappraiser might? Other PSers will know better. Even if they don't, they can probably point you in the right direction for such services.

Ah, ignore my post if you aren't in the UK, it is probably very specific to us. I'm sure a no deal Brexit will help too... It's things getting lost in the chaos rather than theft. My £1000 ring from Blue Nile was just tossed in my porch by FedEx, they didn't even bother to ring the doorbell.

I'm so sorry that's terrible that they wouldn't require your signature. Oh my yes the no deal brexit really will cause so much chaos. What a shame! I hope both parties can find an agreement. I love the UK and loved the ease of travelling there.

Shipping companies in the US are not requiring signatures now due to Covid. I've been lucky so far in that I watch my tracking closely and am sure I am home when signature packages are delievered. They are not even ringing the doorbell for the most part. I am just checking and get the packages inside as soon as I can.

You have a way to insure your package regardless of how it is sent?

I adore EW.
But this is madness.
Something in the tens of thousands is "crazy value" in my book!! And no end-consumer is in any position to work out details for international shipping at that value.
I'm really sorry @Lessics. Surely she could work this out with her London retailer, for a service fee?
What is your insurance situation? Are you covered whilst the stone is being mounted? Do you have independent coverage for shipping?
Please don't rush into a shipping situation that leaves you wholly liable for loss. Shipping is a disaster right now, with both Covid and Christmas - unfortunately the possibility of loss is much higher than normal!

@Lessics Will Brinks work with you? That's a US-based company.

Are you in Germany or France, or neither? I can't remember but be careful about shipping with certain carriers as I remember someone france based had a nightmare clearing customs because of the carrier that was used, and it contained diamonds. maybe Kipari?

I am having my friend send a mega package to me in switzerland and am going to use fedex. I know for a fact that we don't have restrictions on customs etc, but we are not eu.

I could ask her one last time about sending the ring to her Uk retailer. But I’m a bit hesitant as I never felt like she really wanted my business (I decided I really care about the the setting and I can live with the feeling of not having a super friendly chatty encounter). And she did state: “For shipping: we only ship to U.S. addresses.”
I would have it shipped in the new year and I can purchase a third party insurance on the shipment (I would never send it uninsured).

I will look into Brinks! Thank you!
Everybody has given me new ideas. I’m confident I will have my ring on my finger some day ;-)

I remember that thread. I think it was ups. I live in Germany and I have received a few jewellery pieces from the US with fedex and no problems so my fingers are crossed!

Ah, I didn’t realize she had stated that up front as a policy. That’s a turn-off for any international buyer.

Let us know if you contact Brinks? I’m rather curious myself.

So in the end Grace from Jewels by Grace shipped it to me for a fee!
I’m thankful that she helped me (:

Brinks didn’t want anything to do with a private consumer!

I’m glad it’s reached you safely! Have I missed a thread...ahem ahem? It would be unlike me to have missed an EW thread!

I’d forgotten that Grace sells EW settings. That was a good idea to use her.
