Should I ask for a bigger ring size or wear the ring on my rt hand?

I''m normally a size 7, but my ring finger has been swollen and sore for about 2 months now. I went to a first care doctor and she couldn''t see anything wrong on the x-ray and figured it''s probably arthritis. I''m suppose to tape it to the middle finger and take aleve. Both of which helps, but it''s still puffy. So should I ask my bf to get the ring (what ever it''ll be) a half size larger so I can wear it right away on my lft hand or should I figure that the finger will fix itself and wear it on my rt hand in the meantime. Once I actually get a ring, that is. Which should be in the next couple of months. (YAY)

I can''t tell if the problem is because my finger is lonely without a ring

or if it''s a result of being whacked in the past. I hit it with something heavy and hard a few years back but never saw a doctor about it. I figured all they would do is put it in one of those oc finger braces so I did that myself. The knuckle was swollen, red, and sore for a few months but eventually went back to normal just as I thought it''d always be a bit big. I''m hoping my finger will do that again, but who knows.

So should I ask him to get a ring in a size 7.5 or wear the ring on my rt hand?

Indie, I'd get a 7.5...you can always resize later, right?

Unless wearing a ring won't allow your finger to heal.

You might want to visit an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in hands... it may not be broken, but you could have done damage to the joint... or there could be a fracture that doesn''t show up in an xray. (happened to my foot)

If you want a ring that has miligrain/design on the whole shank, you''d probably be better off wearing it on your right hand for now because they can be really hard to resize without damaging the design. Of course, I would then get some cheap ring to put on the left hand so it wasn''t lonely!

If you end up with a ring that can be easily resized, get a bigger one then have it sized with beads or whatever if you want, but talk to your dr. first and make sure it won''t impede the healing process. These things can take a LONG time to heal.

Good luck and be healthy!!!

Since your right hand is the same size (or close enough) as your left, I''d go with that option and resize *bigger* later if you need to, depending on your healing process. Yes, these things can take a while to heal, but I think you might be better off having the ring to wear every day as opposed to having to be without it while it''s sized. Which you still could be. Tough call!

how much larger is your right hand? my right hand ring finger is basically a full size larger than my left ring finger!! so i can''t wear my ring on my right hand at all unless my hands are REALLY cold and then i can get it it on and it''s a little tight.

anyway, i''d also second the suggestion to have an expert look at your hand, it sounds a little worrying that a few years ago that area had trauma and was swollen and now it''s that way again....you don''t want this to keep happening. i''d get it really checked out first then decide what to do about the ring. but now the finger worries me more than the ring size!!

DITTO!

Indiejones,

Were you able to find out if your guy got that antique ring you were loving so much a week or so ago?

I think maybe you should visit a doctor about that. I''d hate for you to have to wear your ring on the wrong hand, and it''d be even worse for you to be in pain without needing to be.

I''m not exactly fond of going to the doctor. My mother was and is a displaced hypochondriac. ( a prime example is being dragged to the emergency room for the bubonic plauge when I had the flu). It left me with a distinct aversion to doctors. Which is not helped any when most of them only ever give vauge and unhelpful answers.

I''m having hand surgery on my rt hand in the summer for carpal tunnel and tendonitis. So I figured I could get the specialist in LA to look at my left ring finger then. I wasn''t impressed by the local guy since he couldn''t figure out what was wrong with my right hand or at least never told me what was wrong and just gave me a useless shot of cortizone. I guess it never occured to him I could have two things wrong with the same hand.

(I tore the tendon going to my thumb last spring and it healed with scarring that needs to be cleaned out. The carpal tunnel is entirely my own fault due to bad posture while on the computer, too many video games, and weeding.)
But maybe I shouldn''t wait until July and go see the local hand guy. If, of course, I can get it before July. *bleh* Health care around here isn''t exactly stellar.

Anyway my right and left hands almost perfectly match in size. My right ring finger is only a tiny smidge bigger than my left used to be.

The ring hasn''t been bought yet. He actually seemed a little put-off by how cheap it is. Another, much bigger, ring just came up that''s also very pretty and maybe more his style. I emailed him about that one as well. Although at this point he may be getting fed up. He said I keep changing my mind. I said I''m just easy to please!

Wow, he wants to spend more. Now that''s impressive!

Indie,

Good luck finding a doctor that you can trust
to heal your finger. Maybe they can give you
some advice on how to wear the ring until it is healed?

I recommend getting the larger size ring (with a comfort fit)
and sizing bumps. It is normal for fingers to swell and shrink
with the weather, and with exercise.

I had my class ring resized from a 7 1/4 to an 8,
and had sizing bumps put in. Now it does not spin,
nor try to fall off when I am cool, nor require
soapy water to put on when I am hot or in line at the airport.

My fiancée's fingers swell and shrink more than most people's.
Her ring's large sizing bumps can accommodate her finger
whether it is a size 8 1/2 or 10 1/2. She says it is very
comfortable.

I hope you get well soon.
