Should I change the diamond in my Marquise ring?

Hi all

I have just joined this forum for some advice please. I have a 1.04ct (F colour, SI2) Marquise ring set in a 0.50ct diamond band which a local jeweller made for me (in the UK). I don't feel as though the Marquise diamond sparkles enough and not sure why. I have a photo and the GIA certificate. I would appreciate if someone could have a look and let me know their thoughts please. I am considering changing the diamond because of this.

From your photo, it looks like it could use a good scrubbing with dish liquid and a toothbrush. Dirty diamonds don't sparkle! :))

Should you? If it bothers you, yes certainly.
Did it always make you feel that way?
If not -
I’d get it a good soak and a good scrub before taking any action tho. Or take it in to be cleaned.

Otherwise the inclusions (number and type) probably contribute.

It has just been professionally steam cleaned. :oops2:

I have asked the jeweller for alternative, sparklier diamonds and he has offered me these - do you think either of these would be better please?GIA 1.5ct.jpegGIA 1.12ct.jpegGIA 1.5ct.jpeg

No, it would not be the basket setting.

It does look a tad lifeless...It is the cut and the clarity that could keep the stone from being sparkly. I would stay away
from stones that have Internal or surface graining. Possibly also any stone with pinpoints and clouds mentioned just
to be safe. You are looking at SI2 stones...can you move up in clarity by any chance?

As far as cut, we can't tell much of anything from the reports. We need to see up close videos of the stones. Aset images
would also be of assistance.

Do you have links to these stones online where we can see videos?

Edit...you posted the same report twice (the 1.05 D). Are there only 2 stones or 3?

I don't have any images yet sorry. How do I find out if stones have internal or surface graining? I will ask the jeweller to send me some SI1 options thanks

Does the stone have strong fluorescence? It doesn’t state that on the GIA report. That sometimes makes a stone appear milky in some light sources.

None at all

Sorry it was a duplicate. only 2 reports.

Marquise diamonds are beautiful, but hard to pick. Cut is the biggest factor. The GIA doesn't grade fancy cuts for quality. So the paper really doesn't tell that much.
It really is a case of you have to see them with your eyes to find your cut ratio etc.
The little feathers/graining are also contributing to the issue in your current stone.
They have really big tables so you want to keep an inclusions to the edges so they can be better hidden by the faceting.
The basket of a ring shouldn't effect the sparkle of a well cut diamond.
Here is a link to a video of it. Could it be the basket setting that is stopping it sparkling?: https://1drv.ms/v/s!AgqRVJIZjcHZkFiTSYBAjizNoNFB

Many thanks for all your replies - really appreciate all the advice.

When you find a few contenders, post all the pics and videos they'll give you. We can look at them. If you can physically go to see them, do it and ask them to let you outside and into normal lighting.
If you come up empty we can also help you source one as well if you give us a budget.
I'm more of a hype woman than anything useful:lol:, but we have some great eyes on PS willing to help!

That would be a great help thank you. The jeweller I buy from let's me upgrade if I spend over £500 more with my ring trade in, so it's easier to stay with him.

It's under Comments on the GIA report (bottom of left-hand column).

Unless you are super color sensitive, you could probably drop down to a G color and then up in clarity to SI1 or VS2. That may allow your jeweler to show you more options.

I will have a look at those options too thanks

Is that stone eye-clean?

This newest stone you posted is a 6 main whereas it looks like your other stone was an 8 main. They will have a different
look through the center. Not sure if that's what you're talking about or not.

I'm own ring has 6 main. I was thinking more that the shape wasn't symmetrical even though the report says VG symmetry

You're right...I looked at the picture of your stone and not its grading report.

The highest grade for Symmetry is Excellent. VG is quite common for fancy shapes like marquise and pears (and others).

Have you asked the jeweler to look for something with a bit lower color but higher clarity?

Yes, but the price was a lot more
