Should I get another dress?

In Singapore where I live, most people rent dresses for their big day. I''ve almost exhausted the options in the wedding studio and yet I can''t seem to find a gorgeous dress that flatters. Do you think it is more important to wear a flattering gown or a beautiful gown?

This dress seems to flatter my shape but I''m worried about the amount of detailing it has. Is it too much? Do my breasts look prickly? Does this language portend a potential breakdown?

I hope I haven''t scared you. Please help.

I think it's a beautiful dress- love the train! And, yes, it is flattering! I think THE dress should be one that flatters and is beautiful and that you love and that you know is THE dress!

I think the dress is gorgeous, but if you are not happy with it, then it is not "the one" for you!

I think you look great in that gown! However, I recently went through similar doubts after I bought a dress spur of the moment-- if you''re not sure and you have any reservations about any of it- if prickly chest is all you will think about- keep shopping. I''m shopping for a second dress and taking my time to find one I will LOVE-- I''ll have to sell the other one. But I only get one day!

Thanks for helping me to see the humour in this. I''ve taken my pre-wedding shots in a gorgeous dress only to discover that it made me look thick in the trunk in pictures.

So I decided to choose another dress from the shop. After the above shots were taken
I got the dress designer to shorten the straps by pinning it up. I think it fits better here.

Corseted, I think the problem, if you will, is that you are very petite and that style dress sort of swallows you up. Have you tried a mermaid shape, or a sheath? Or something that sits closer to the body? You have a great figure and could wear something much tighter fitting, with less fabric and detailing, and still be very elegant but in proportion to your dress. Does that make sense?

Thanks for the great feedback. Remember how I said I''ve exhausted the gowns in the shop? I know what you mean about a mermaid shape, my evening gown from the shop is a lilac halter mermaid gown. I look a bit top heavy in sheath dresses. I would want a simpler dress but I''m in a bit of a quandary because the shop owner''s losing her patience with me. Oh well....

Hi Corseted! I think the top of the dress just fits you perfectly and looks amazing, but I agree with Surfgirl in that the dress almost looks like it is wearing you, not the other way around. I think what might help that is if the dress is shortened. Can they hem the dress so that it doesnt puddle at your feet?

I have to say I think it''s awesome that people rent dresses in SIngapore- I wish we had more stores that do similar rentals like that here! It would have saved me lots of money!!

Corseted, I'm sure there must be many nice bridal salons in SNG! Find another one with someone who will work WITH you and your body type. I was thinking more along the lines of a style like the one below...it would be feminine, plenty "bridal", and still be tailored to your body enough to show off YOU, not be you wearing a big dress. Have you tried anything like this yet?

Have you already paid a deposit for the bridal salon? If not, how about choosing from other bridal salons? Michelle HuiMin at BridalVeil is a great designer and would be able to design something and custom make it for you. You have a great figure and I agree that this dress is a bit much for you. You should wear something that shows off your figure and make you feel gorgeous for the day!

Hi, Surfgirl, I love the Lhuillier style gowns you linked to. I think they''re timeless and elegant. I do worry that the gown in my pictures will look dated in a few years. My wedding will entail a formal eight-course dinner in a hotel ballroom (it''s a Chinese thing) so I guess I was looking for something ballgownish.

Shigidigi, OUpeargirl: I wasn''t wearing my heels or a crinoline in the pictures. With heels and a crinoline (which the shop will provide), I think I can solve the pooling hem problem. I did try on the dress with a crinoline too but the FI did not like the wide look. (I know... he''s seen me in the dress before the big day.

)

The biggest problem I have is, we''ve contracted ourselves to the shop months ago. We''ve taken our pre-wedding photoshoot, paid a big deposit so I don''t think I can go to another bridal designer. What I can do is plead with the shopowner to let me choose another dress....

I was just looking at your large photo and I think part of the problem, aside from the dress swallowing you up, is that the bodice part where the rhinestones dip down into a point? I think that that side portion - where the rhinestones start dipping down from your hip - should be starting more at your waist. You can see how low down the point goes, all the way to your "hoohah"

, and I think most of the time, that style should have the pointed bottom tip ending somewhere just below your belly button. On you the proportions are much bigger. You''ve got such a fantastic little bod, show it off! Get the shop owner to get something more Lhullier-ish and see how it looks. I guarantee it''ll be smashing on you.

I agree with surfgirl. The bodice seems a bit big for you. Perhaps if they have a smaller size?
The other thing that I don't like is the 2 bows on the back of your straps. They are a bit distracting.

Thanks for the feedback, lili. Actually in the last picture I posted, we''ve already adjusted the bodice to fit. The dress is a sample size last worn by a model for a bridal catwalk show so it was padded at the bust. We had to snip the pads out and adjust the straps so the bodice fit, like in the last picture. The shop only makes one size for each dress. Some allowance is left at the seams but if you''re larger than a S/M size, generally you would have to tailor a dress from scratch at an additional cost at the bridal studio.

I actually like the 2 bows. Without them, it would just be another spaghetti strap, yeah?

The straps have been adjusted inwards to fit me better so the bows now fall closer to the middle of my back.

I won''t go back to the pre-wedding shoot dress, it doesn''t fit as well. Those pictures were taken by the studio so I''m still waiting for them to be returned.
