Should I reset my e-ring as a five stone?

Hi everyone,

I have been going round the houses with what to do with my loose diamond and have one more idea!

I’ve been trying to think it all through a bit more - what do I want to be able to wear daily etc… Ultimately my wedding set is mismatched which has always bothered me, I love both pieces individually but don’t think they sit well together. Initially, I was looking at creating a five stone with the loose diamond to wear with my wedding band and then also buying a slimmer band I can wear with my e-ring. However, this is essentially creating two separate wedding sets, whilst it would give me options to mix things up, ultimately I would never wear my set together again. I am quite a lazy jewellery wearer and tend to wear the same bits every day.

So, tell me if this is a silly idea. The prongs on my e-ring look a little wobbly anyway so I would want it looking at and sorting regardless. But it got me thinking maybe I combine my e-ring with the loose diamond to create a five stone? I have a couple of 3mm diamonds from a vintage brooch I can use. Or maybe just a three stone?

The only thing that may throws this off is that my diamond in my e-ring is a OEC and the loose diamond is a MRB. The loose diamond is from my original e-ring so has a lot of sentimental value, even though it’s not a great quality diamond. I would need to find a match somehow that is a lovely diamond but doesn’t outshine it. I’m hoping the fact that the diamonds are smaller mean that the OEC and MRBs would look ok together?

Also my husband is very sentimental so he may have the possible following reactions a) hate the idea as it means completely changing the design of the e-ring that he created for me, b) love that I want to combine both diamonds so they can sit together in one piece of jewellery.

Some pics so you know what I’m rabbiting on about! I would appreciate any advice or thoughts you have.

Wedding ring with vintage diamonds 3mm wide, I like wearing this on its own at the moment

Both together - I feel the wedding ring is too wide and makes my diamond look smaller

Vintage brooch with 3mm diamonds (around the pearl) against the 0.39ct loose, the diamonds in the bands on both my e-ring and wedding ring came from this brooch. There is an agreement to only use half the diamonds from this brooch and leave the remaining for my brother in law.

While I like the idea of a 5 stone with both your sentimental stones in it, I personally would not combine OECs with RBs. YMMV...

Thank you, yes I wondered if that would be an issue.

I don’t mind the look of mixing your OEC and MRB at all, especially in these sizes. In fact, I think it would make a lovely piece that combines your sentimental stones and gives you that blingy across the finger presence.

Jewelry is personal. It should make you happy to wear it!
Go for it

Aah thank you @Bonfire, I’ll have to see what my husband has to say, but it does appeal to have both my special stones together.

Can we reset that beautiful brooch with Moissanite or some other man made stone when you have finished ?
Even just Swarovski crystals or similar

Good luck on your reset though =)2

I definitely should, it’s a beautiful brooch and thank you!

Oh please please please don’t mix an old cut and a modern cut diamond !
I love the idea of using those stones and they could make lovely side stones for a colored stone right hand ring but oh the difference to me would stick out like a sore thumb!

However- with that in mind- I came here to say a 5 stone would 10000% change the entire look of your set and I think it would be for the better. I have a long and we’ll documented journey of changing a .84 soli to a 5 stone. The difference in presence on my size 7.5 finger was astounding.

Thanks for the reply @Niel I have literally just found your threads and have started going through them!

So you would keep the MRB for something else and then do a five stone with the OECs?

I will speak to my husband, he’s more than happy for me to create something with the MRB but I’m not sure how he would feel about also changing my e-ring setting. I think he may be more receptive to change if it was to accommodate both sentimental stones but that would mean mixing. I think this is why I’m struggling, I would like to create something that I would wear a lot, rather than sit in a box unworn.

As the mixing of OEC and MRB has been divisive, I thought I would have a look at them together. The MRB does look much whiter to me (even though it’s a H vs I) and I can tell it doesn’t have the chunky facets of my OEC.

So I think I’m back to my original plan of getting a slimmer band to wear with my e-ring and creating something new with the MRB. Although I do think I can get away with using the stones from the brooch with the MRB, they seem a similar colour and I don’t notice a difference in the facets.

I was looking at getting two emerald cut diamonds (different shape so won’t compete with the MRB) to use east west either side of the MRB, with two of the 3mm diamonds either side of them. So still graduated but hopefully in proportion, a kind of round and baguette look (without the baguettes!)

Here is my rubbish drawing and playing with a paper ring!

Have you thought of making a twist on your 5 stone idea, maybe something asymmetrical? Perhaps.. bezel the oec, halo the MRB to actually highlight the differences? I totally understand the feeling of using sentimental stones, something I didn't realize when doing a couple of these was with the new design, I forgot which stone was which, and that bummed me out. I'd definitely use them all in the same design, as long as I could look at it and remember which came from what. Plus you'd have a completely one-off design that is all yours.

I googled, asymmetrical cluster ring.

Personally I would never mix MRBs with an OEC... but I'm very particular about these things

Oh these are really pretty, I hadn’t thought of something like this and actually embracing the difference between the stones. Definite food for thought so thank you!

Thank you, it seems to be a really personal decision, I keep going backwards and forwards with it!

The thing about it is it looks like a mistake. It’s not different enough to look intentional and they’re not similar enough to look the same.

agree with this

Yes I can see that.

May I ask what you would both do @Niel and @Diamondgirl1702? I don’t think hubby would be up for resetting the e-ring, plus even if I could I’m not sure my diamond can hold it’s own against my wedding band.

Would you just get a slimmer band to wear with the e-ring and then do something else with the MRB?

I would approach these as two separate projects. your e-ring and band situation first ...and then your MRB project (RHR or pendant or whatever else you want to do with it)

if you are bothered by your band width get a slimmer band. You can get cheap bands on amazon to help you decide which width works best

Hiiii :). In my opinion a 5 stone ring would change the look of your ring. I like the way it is now.I would take those diamonds and make a nice pendant.

Wow, that brooch is pretty. Can u buy out your brother in laws interest and redo that brooch?

Thank you, that’s sensible advice! Maybe I’m trying to consider too much all at the same time. I’ve had some samples to play with, I believe my e-ring is a touch under 2mm as the 2mm bands I’ve tried seem a little wider. I thought I’d love an engraved style but it makes me feel like I’m trying to replace my wedding band, which I don’t want to do. So maybe more of a fun stacking band?

This is also 2mm but it’s shaped so looks narrower and perhaps too narrow.

So I’m considering just a pave or shared prong style? This one is white gold and sits too high so I’d have to get something else.

Yes that’s true, it would completely change the look.

I did consider a pendant but I don’t wear them much, I also wouldn’t be able to wear it for work so would like something I would wear more often.

It is really pretty! Afraid not, it’s been the agreement since we were given the brooch, so we definitely have to stick to it.

Sorry, just while I’m thinking, would it be straight forward to change the channel set diamonds in my e-ring to bead set? Or would that be going in to reset territory?
