Should screw back earrings do up tight?

I just received my first pair of screw back earrings and the back can easily spin all the way up the threaded post and on to the non-threaded part right behind the diamond. It never gets tight or has any friction. Is this a fault?

Can you change them for good butterflys or anything but screws as you will loose one (then have them changed).

When a threaded ear nut fits the post properly, it will not go past the threaded portion of the post at all. The post is too thin for the bank or the nut is a bit too large for the ear nut. These do come in various size diameter wire posts and nut openings. Have your jewelry change the posts or the ear nut to properly fit one another. They should fit somewhat tight and not unscrew on their own. The nut should not go past the end of the threads on the posts.

I have several screwback earrings and they never tighten the way you expect them too. They will freely spin to loosen but just as easily to tighten. I don’t think mine go past the threading, but I do always feel safer that a blouse removal isn’t going to just pop off a regular backing. I love mine and feel safer with them.

I could not count the times that we gave the following advice:
Although Screw backs ostensibly offer more security, they are far less effective than good, heavyweight friction backs.
Unlike iron or steel, gold or platinum is not well suited for treading. If a friction back gets loose, you can simply press it back to shape with your fingers. Once a threaded post is stripped, it's done.
Plus when you put screw backs on, they are either too tight, or too loose.
You push the friction back easily to the comfortable, secure position.
But nonetheless, we still have people asking us to use screwbacks:)

Yes, sadly, this is exactly what happened to me. I specifically had my diamond studs set in platinum screwbacks; at the time it was recommended as the most secure. I lost one of those studs despite having recently tightened it. It must have unwound and I never felt it. I now have la poussette (Protektor) backs after replacing the lost diamond.

Couldn't agree more! Also, screw backs really wreak havoc on the inside of the piercing and it can cause infections, etc. A properly fitted friction back, as you've stated, are an excellent choice. I also always have an extra set of backings on hand and bring with me when I travel. If you lose a backing or in the rare event (yet does happen) one fails, you will have a backing to put the earring on.

I was given screw back diamond studs which annoyed me. I found some silicone backs which work with the screw back posts-now I wear them all the time.

Yes, this is what I do, too.
I purchased a used pair of diamond studs, and the screw post was stripped and the backs weren't secure. I replaced with jumbo silicone backs,( I screw them on )and they are perfect now.

Thanks for your take on this. I have never had screwbacks, but I always wondered if they might be more secure. I'm glad now I don't have them.
