Hi,

I bought this natural diamond recently (graded: G, S1, 1.07 carat)

Is it fair for an S1 diamond to have an inclusion this large? Should I be worried about the imperfection?

no expert either, but it's white and looks oddly shaped, maybe a composite of inclusions. Some are tiny diamond crystals within a diamond, some are other minerals. A couple people here have a diamond with a tiny garnet in it.
I hope you don't hate it, I think it's cool.

Who graded it ? What is the report number ?

Did the diamond come with a GIA grading certificate? Did you know about it see this inclusion before purchase?

Not with a GIA one, no, but a 'personalised appraisal'.

I purchased this from a family friend of 20+ years.

It was described as being 'triple excellent parameters' (plus a lot of other verbiage).

And I didn't notice it before. Perhaps the lighting wasn't right.

She also said the following:

"Yes, clarity is SI 1. Meaning with 10x magnification in specific diamond grading light a grader would be able to see 1 inclusion. My engagement ring is SI 1 as are most- but keeping triple ex cut parameters the sparkle & brilliance are so strong & vivid SI 1 is perfectly fine."

Safe to say I can see the inclusion without 10x magnification!

I think at best it's a GIA Si2 ~ If you're in the US it's unlikely that a legit 1.07 ct G 3X Si1 would have made it over here without a Third Party Gem Lab Report... Was it a pre-owned and they lost the report or are you overseas in a market with access to ungraded stones ?

I'm in the UK and I wouldn't be surprised if she had access to off-market stuff.

Is it worth taking to a jewellers to get independently assessed?

ohhhh no. Basically this person didn't tell you the truth. It's not an SI1. not with that giant visible inclusion.

ugh even more clear this person is wrong. Clarity and cut are 100% different things.

Also the stone doesn't look very well cut either....

Is it clean? Om the picture it looks dirty. Maybe it is simply dirt. Diamonds attract dirt easily.

No, it's not on the surface

Okay, thank you.

I think I will get it independently appraised and go back to her with the results.

What did you pay for the stone? Did you have a low budget you needed to stick with and wanted a 1 carat stone (no judgement)?
Just trying to figure out what might have gone wrong.

I paid £4,100 for the ring altogether.

I am not sure what the cost of these things were, and my budget was not particularly rigid. I went the seller as they were a close family friend and thought they'd steer me in the right direction (I know nothing about diamonds etc)

I'm sorry @kingofkong ...is the ring returnable? I would take it back to your family friend and tell her you want a GIA graded stone.
A true SI1 (or better) that is well cut...Triple X. There are more details to look for in a well cut stone, but I'll stop there, not knowing
whether you can return it or not.

Blue Nile has an EU version. These stones are GIA. Your stone is likely lower than an SI1 and may or may not be a G.

You can look here to see what you could have gotten.

We can help you with specific angles/table/depths to look for if you want to go there.

The price is low for the carat weight including the mounting. So I am not sure you got fleeced. However, that is not an SI1 diamond per GIA standards. And it is not well cut so it will not sparkle and much as a diamond with better angles to the cut. If humanly possible I would return it.

Cavity?

Sorry, however, that is overpriced for a second-hand ring, even if it is Platinum, IMHO.

HOWEVER, that is not uncommon for UK prices and I am based in the UK.

Hence I have not bought any fine jewellery in the UK for over 20 years except for one branded bracelet.

DK :confused2:

I didn’t catch that it is an estate/vintage piece. That does change the price evaluation for sure.

Did you purchase this ring? And if so an you return it? Since you can see the inclusion with the naked eye it is probably an I1 clarity grade. I feel really bad that your family friend for whatever reason described this diamond as SI1 to you.

If you can't return it then maybe you can embrace the diamond as having a nature created beauty mark?

I really hope you can return it

Should I be worried about the imperfection?

Worried that it’s there? That you can see it? The diamond’s structural integrity? My question is, how do you feel about it? The jeweler, either knowingly or unknowingly sold you on an incorrect and misleading clarity grade for this ring. Given that, I feel you were “taken” and paid too much.

echoing Bonfire, how do you feel about it - is it a blemish in your eyes or a unique identifier? I have diamonds with some big crystals and I enjoy them but this is your ring.
