My table is 66% and depth is 64.4%....is this a TOTAL "no-no" in the world of diamonds? Does anyone own a similiar depth/table ratio stone...and if so, I''d love to see pics!!

JesseGrl,
It''s not a big no-no that''s sealed in stone. It is only a caution because the probability of a good crown height decreases when the table is larger than the depth but as I said before, that isn''t necessarily true. If the crown height of the stone is at least 10% and upwards, then the diamond will very likely be a firey stone and the larger table may not be such an terrible thing. Relax.

How do I find out my crown height, it''s not on the GIA report

They are usually on EGL certs, or you can get the measurements from a Sarin machine but it means that the stone must be loose. It appears that your asscher is already mounted and you are happy with the stone, but are starting to second guess yourself about the beauty of your diamond. Remember that the we regulars here at Pricescope are crazy about details, numbers and measuring optical performance so we tend to be more critical than the regular everyday folk. If you are still concerned about your diamond, the best thing you can do is to take it to an independent appraiser and let him/her give his/her opinion.

I don''t have an asscher, want one, but don''t have one yet......I do have a princess with a large table and a much smaller depth. Way more variation than yours. It''s a beautiful princess as you can see in my avatar, although it is very square and not rectangular as the picture portrays. The picture made everything shrink up like that. Even my fingers look skinny. Cool!

Anyway, this one''s specs defy the laws of what''s supposed to be desirable to some extent and still is a 1B on the gem appraiser''s cut scale. I did the same thing you are doing and checked and checked on different web sites to see which diamonds fell into their "premium" or "very good" cut range. Low and behold some with tables larger than depth can be a poor cut and some aren''t. Mine does exactly what it was supposed to do, sparkle and shine.

There was an article or TV show years and years ago, I can''t remember, that reminded me of diamonds. It was right around the time when Bo Derek did that movie "Ten" and suddenly she was a "ten". Shortly after that several actresses from Hollywood were mentioned as being a ten. The one I remember best was Meryl Streep. They pointed out how her nose was too long and narrow, her eyes were either too close together or too far apart, yet when you combined all of her undesirable features, she was a very beautiful woman. A ten.

So, love the whole body, not just the parts......if you get my meaning......

Jesse..is your stone an asscher? If so, the ''rules'' for those are much different than with rounds.

To get crown information you would need to have a Sarin report done on your stone. I require this before I purchase anything...but I''m a stickler.

it''s an "asscher" or square emerald cut. It is a modern asscher if you will, it has the clipped edges and the pattern is pretty strong, obviously not that of a royal asscher or an antique asscher but bold enough . My fiance bought the diamond from a jeweler that we trust and we loooove his work. I did my research on the 4 c''s, but didn''t know what the "table" was, and how important it is. The jeweler got 3 asschers for us to choose from- we looked at the inside, outside and under special lights, w/o special lights, on a sunny day, cloudy day, etc. We looked at these stones until we did not want to look anymore! I did not get the impression he was trying to doop us, scam us, take advanatge of us at all b/c he WANTED us to examine these stones. This man is extremely passionate about jewelry, it is so funny to hear him tell us the diamond speaks to him, yadda yadda yadda. ANYWAYS we bought the diamond, had it set in a carl blackburn antique replica platinum setting, fiance proposed and well....then i found pricescope. The diamond is .87 carat, 5x64x5x62- depth 64.4, table 66%...now I am all worried about how horrid it is. The stone does not sparkle like a princess or a round b/c well....it''s an asscher ( square emerald). the emerald was always my fav. b/c of it''s glassy appearance and that is why I like the modern asscher. I know antique asschers were very deep and my stone is not but it is the table that is really worrying me- Mara, do you know where this table/depth ratio fits on any reputable scale? My diamond is slightly off in it''s setting and I am planning on taking it to the jeweler to have that fixed, when he takes it out of the setting I am going to have a sarin report done on it if possible. Thanks for the advice!

once you get the sarin you can run it through the AGA cut grade calculator on gemappraisers.com and see where it falls...i don''t think with an asscher though just because the depth is lower than table that it would be a bad thing necessarily...but the sarin information will help!

do you love the way it looks? if so, don''t worry! asschers and other fancies were never meant to be quite as precise by NUMBERS as rounds are...i think that fancies go more by look then numbers, whereas for me, rounds are more about numbers and then the resulting look.

Hi Jessesgirl,

I gave the GIA report to my finace, but I remember that depth was around 57% and my table was around 65%, which is a greater difference between yours. After I got my report I started looking up what ideal specs for an asscher would be, and started to feel bad about my diamond. I eventually stopped looking, I love my diamond, I love the way it sparkles and shimmers, and I had to decide to stop doing that to myself.

Your ring is gorgeous!!!

I think we all get caught up in numbers, it''s how the cut is and how a stone sparkles that really matters!! You have to trust your eyes to some degree, right???

I too have decided to stop obsessing over specs and stuff on pricescope...it is informative but I will leave it at that. Before I realized that the depth/table was off I looooved my stone...so why should it make a difference if someone tells me this combo does not work...it does!!! Your stone is sooooooooo beautiful...I thank you so much for sharing that w/me...I felt better before but now i REALLY have peace of mind! Thanks a bunch!
