A longtime lurker coming out of the woodwork to ask what jewelry do you wear on vacation? And even better yet, show me! :wavey:

My husband and I are traveling overseas at the end of the year and I've decided to leave my wedding and engagement rings at home in case they get lost, stolen or draw unwanted attention. Now I'm torn about what to do for a 'travel ring' and what else to take with me. I think I would like something as inconspicuous as a plain gold band, but then I worry like a true ps'er that it won't be enough sparkle to get me through three weeks of a semi-naked finger!

So I'm curious to know, how do other ps'ers deal with this dilemma. Do you take a plain ring but hide your sparkle in a dbty necklace under your scarf? Do you only take understated pieces that you still get a lot of enjoyment out of, or do you leave it all at home? Do you take more than what you can wear at one time or do you enjoy having pieces to swap out every other day? Or are you the type who thinks that's what insurance is for so wear it and wear it all!?

I would love to know what's in your traveling collection so... Show me your travel ring/jewelry!

this is not what you are after, but i wouldn't never leave my ering in the house if i went away. Are you leaving them with someone to look after? i worry that there are too many opportunists out there that watch for houses with no one at home to rob. I have a safety deposit box at the bank for the big stuff.

i take my ering everywhere with me. i spent 2 weeks in india earlier in the year which i found full of opportunists. when i felt uncomfortable i would wear the diamond towards my palm and keep my hand closed

the only other jewelry i would take travelling would be costume jewelry. too many opportunities for things to be lost or stolen

Thanks for sharing hippi pixi!

Absolutely my rings will be in a safety deposit box while we are away. By 'home' I meant I was leaving them behind and not taking them with me on travel.

Actually, my ering and eternity band, along with stud earrings and bezel necklace, have been in the safe deposit box since the beginning of the month. I was going away for a long weekend with my daughter's high school band, knew I would be helping haul instruments and scenery, so I didn't want anything to get damaged. I have some cz rings that I wore as my 'set' and have been enjoying wearing them and my other jewelry (pearls, amethyst earrings, silver hoops) that doesn't get worn as much, usually.

I'll probably go to the bank tomorrow, because I have the day off, and have been missing my diamonds. Absence makes the heart grow fonder!

Depending where you are going, I might go with the plain gold band you mentioned. We were in Las Vegas for the band competition , so there was plenty of bling, on and off the field, just not so much on me ;)

Just adding that because we do not post pics of non-gem stones, I won't be posting a picture. But, if you picture in your head three slim band rings, two white, one yellow gold, or a yellow gold princess three stone, that is the looks I have been wearing.

I have always worn my rings but after a couple of stories from friends, I don't think I will anymore. A friend was mugged for her bling in Paris. PARIS, I tell you!

I have bought a plain silver ring from ... Pandora. It's the silver bubbles ring. It was less than $50 and whilst I really wanted the VCA Perlee, we have just bought a house so I was on a bit of a budget for this one. It's certainly nice enough and I do feel naked without my rings. I might get another something to stack with it.

I think the point of "travel" rings is that they don't sparkle. You don't want to attract attention, no? I don't understand people who replace their gorgeous baubles with equally gorgeous sparkly fakes which attract the same amount of attention. Or maybe it's just where I tend to travel!

I went to Hawaii earlier this year (from Australia), I wore my engagement ring for the first few days. After forgetting to take it off then going for a swim at the beach I freaked out that I would lose it in the ocean like I've lost many rings back home. We were staying across the road from the international market place so I bought one of those silver frangipani rings with the single flower on it and I loved wearing it! I didn't take it off for the whole trip. Left my other ring in the hotel safe and had no stress :)

I either wear a plain gold band or cz eternity. Switch out earrings too. Basically everything I can lose or give up without a second thought.

I have a CZ 3 stone that's set in 14k gold that I switch out. I agree with you traveling with jewelry is nerve wracking!

My friend has a large safe in her house like Fort Knox. I send my stuff there while I am gone. I buy a fakey nice $10 ring from kohls to wear, like a fake citrine or something that won't be a big loss if stolen or lost.

With insurance I don't feel like I have to leave everything in the bank vault when we travel, but I do tone it down depending where we go. For camping I've been wearing an eternity band. For close to home coastal vacations I've taken my big girl. If I was going to San Francisco I might take my little OEC; the bigger the city or the more of a tourist destination it is the more conservative I get. Going overseas I would probably buy a plain wide gold band and wear only that.

Other than wedding rings, on vacation I wear CZ earrings or small diamond studs. Whether or not I take a RHR or stack depends on how safe I feel the location is. Same with my pendant. I take into account the security of our lodgings, as well.

This is my intended travel set:

Andelain!!! You're back!!! I'm so glad!

Back to our subject...!
Until now, i have been wearing my original, pink sapphire and diamond engagement ring, because it's simple, small and i don't think it attracts a lot of attention. I've been pairing it with my pink sapphire and diamond eternity band.
BUT...lately, i bought a Cartier Trinity ring, which i ADORE and i'm planning on wearing this one from now on during my trips!
I attach pics of both!

Thanks ladies! Your travel sets are gorgeous and very inspiring!

natyLad, I really love your pink sapphire and diamond eternity band, it's a real beauty! :lickout:
Andelain, wow!

Misskittykat, your story of your friend's being mugged in Paris has really shocked me! Paris is one of our destinations and my understanding from friend's who lived there is that pick-pocketing is a lot more likely than aggravated burglaries but now I have heard your story I will be extra alert!

I've ordered a very inexpensive 4mm 'rose gold toned' stainless steel band from eBay and will test it out before we go. I hope it will scratch that itch of having something shiny to enjoy while we are away.

Any more, ladies? Even an gorgeously buttery plain gold band.... I love seeing all your alternative travel combinations!

Interesting topic!

I normally wear my 1.19ct EC whenever I can outside work as it does not get worn very often, and I am very proud/fond of it.

Therefore, it normally travels with me whenever I am away.

DK :))

Bringing this thread back because I'm struggling with this myself. I have a vintage engagement ring from the 30s and I don't want to "leave it behind" when I go to Mexico on vacation, but I am worried about taking it and something happening to the ring. It is irreplaceable to me. I never thought I would be this attached to my e-ring! I was thinking about just wearing my plain wedding band and diamond anniversary band together, but the diamond band is from the 1950s and I worry about it being lost/stolen too! My rings are very delicate and while I wear them mostly every day, I never wear them to the beach here at home in San Diego and I usually don't wear them when I'm at home.

I did check eBay but I didn't want to spend too much on just a travel ring. I am worried if I wear nothing I will miss my rings and be sad I don't have my little beauties with me. Such a dilemmia!

I either wear my eternity or I wear an antique sapphire setting with 1.19ct OEC.

Depends on where I'm traveling -- most recently we spent a couple weeks surfing in Costa Rica over the holidays and I wore my VCA RG Perlee. (I should also have left behind about 90% of my clothing and doubled the sunscreen. )

Thanks Rubies-R-Me!
Love that wide band! I'm not too familiar with Bulgari -- that might have to change.

I wear one of the following:
1. Colored gemstone ring in a cheaper setting
2. 3-stone Moissy in platinum setting
3. Platinum setting with a CZ

Or if I am going some where real active ... a 3 stone set in a silver setting or nothing at all.

Never wear something you would hate to lose.

Where do most people find their "stand in/travel" rings? I really don't want to spend too much.I know there is always a risk of loss even in everyday life. I would probably be devistated but it's just an object, so I would get over it. But I want to try and avoid a high risk situation.

I wear something that I still find visually pleasing on my hand, but inexpensive. I currently have two favorite low-key options -- a silver ring with small Mahenge spinels, and a combo of my 14k yellow gold 3mm wedding band and a silver braided band from Etsy.

I would echo what others have said -- find something you wouldn't hate to lose. Personally, I would also avoid anything that actually looks like a diamond because it could draw unwanted attention. But I'd still make it a fun piece of jewelry that can bring a smile to your face while you're wearing it. I think Etsy is a great place for pieces like that.

You can look around on DB and LT. For my travel rings I want to make sure I like/ love them so I wouldn't just buy anything. You can also look on etsy for perhaps some inexpensive CS pieces or silver pieces.

A wink CS is beautiful and very inexpensive if you want to have that mounted.

This pic is just frigging awesome! And thank you!

Back to the travel stuff.

This is my band that was reset with my original wedding diamonds. Comfortable and not too blingy.

Depending on the destination, either a plain silver band (bought at airport silver kiosk, lol) or if somewhere a little more civilized, a higher end Celtic silver band. To me the risk of loss is secondary to wanting to avoid attracting unwanted attention. I was tied up and robbed at knifepoint at a hotel in Spain as a teenager so am very attuned to the reality that ugly things happen.

Gahhhhhh!!!!!! I love surfing - literally, my favorite trip, always (did you see the freaking swells Costa Rice had last week, unbelievably perfect!)...

back to the subject - was on a recent trip and left absolutely everything at home. In general, I won't bring or wear anything on a trip outside of the states that I'm not willing to lose. It's not worth it, and I've had close calls in places minus any jewelry at all. Also, I tend to have local friends and like meeting new folks on trips. I think I would actually be a little embarrassed to wear my e-ring, when I know they are working really hard just to get by. It would make me feel out of place to be wearing it. And, I wouldn't want anyone to develop an impression of me based on a piece of jewelry that I was wearing, as opposed to actually hanging out with me. If I were already married, I'd have a simple silver band to wear on solo trips, but that's about it.

In the states, I don't worry about it and just don't take things off. Even where I live, I turn the ring underneath my palm when I'm walking around late at night by myself - I don't need any unwanted attention, and crap just happens where I live, so why up the probability?
