Side stone variance?

I want to make a three stone ring. How much variance in MM size is acceptable for side stones? I have one side stone that is 5.60 x5.68. I have found another stone that is 5.39 x 5.53. Would that be too noticeable? My center stone is 7.20 x 7.33

How much color difference is acceptable? These are all OEC's.

If anyone has something similar I would love to see pictures with the mm sizes of your stones.

I believe only you could decide.

Like colours, some peeps are sensitive to size variation than others.

From a personal perspective, I have refrained from purchasing many "matched pair" CSs from a certain Etsy vendor, as I could see the difference in size in the photos of the listings.

My advice would be to request for photos of the two stones side by side so that you could assess if the difference is noticeable to you.

DK :))

I agree, it is how sensitive to size you are. Are they MRB's or OECs? And what kind of setting are you aiming for?

All OEC's. I've ask for pics/videos of the two stones side by side.

For variance in mm size-
I think how noticeable it will be (besides personal preference)
Will depend greatly on how that diameter variance is spread out (or not) over the entire circle shape of the girdle outline - and in comparison of that to the other two stones /how their deviation is spread out. But - my sidestones are noticeably smaller than yours.

For variance in color -
I wouldn’t recommend nor repeat the variance I have in my three stone. But mine has one sidestone leaning yellow undertone and the other one leaning brown.

Edited to add
Setting the sidestones at an angle might also mask some discrepancy in size - but again not effective if not mind clean.

Here’s the measurements that show deviations of diameters on mine.

I think it’d be more noticeable to the naked eye if set all three on same horizontal plane

Hey Taylorbug,

So it would be hard from my experience to find perfectly symmetric OECs… They all have quite a bit of variance in their diameter but yours don’t seem so bad actually. Most likely, if they’re going to be prong set, the prongs would hide the variance and you wouldn’t be able to notice it… Even modern round brilliants have variance and in comparable sized stones, this might be something like 0.05mm or so.

Good luck!

Did you look at the stones using diambd ? May be able to give you some ideas if it will bother you or not. The slant will take
away from how noticeable the size difference is but like @Rfisher mentioned....there is the mind-cleanliness that you may or
may not be able to deal with.
