So some of the post about animals got me thinking. It''s funny to me how animals have ''expressions'' even though their faces don''t contort like ours do, you know, like they can''t give a totally shocked look (wide eyed and gapping mouth) like we can. But there are still expressions there that probably only their owners can distinquish.

For example, my adorable Hobbes (see avator), he''s my boy, very nosey cat has to check everything out, when a door or cupboard is closed you bet he''ll try to open the darn thing. Any plant that enters the house he thinks is for him.

So the other day, I was in my room and he had been downstairs, snooping around no doubt, and I hear him come running up the stairs and walk into the room, stop, and look at me. I said ''What did you do?!?!?!?!?'' He just has this guilty look about him. So I go downstairs...sure enough he had knocked over my mom''s plant, dirt every where!!!!

I had to laugh though because even though I knew he had done something bad I didn''t react right away when I should have. Too bad you can''t give cats or dogs time outs.

Just thought I''d share.

I TOTALLY agree! I swear my cat has facial expressions too. I know when he's mad...when he wants attention...when he's being curious...when he wants to play. I look at his face and think how weird it is that he's so expressive.

I talk to my cat like he's a human and it's as if he totally understands me cuz he'll walk towards me or look at me or even talk back with mewing and purring noises. If I want him to come over to me, I just hafta to look at him with a "I want you kitty" face and he'll stare at me for a second, then make a purr/mew sound and walk right over. He obviously can read my face too...

He knows when I'm sad or angry and he'll come snuggle and try to make me feel better....

AND he acts like a dog cuz when he wants something, he comes right over to me and bothers me until I get it for him- water, food, treats, when he wants the blinds open so he can look outside....he even recognizes the sounds of my car and my bf and roommates' cars so when he hears it, he instantly goes to the front door and greets the person who walks in. If you don't walk in, he starts meowing and is really sad and goes back to the window to look out and see if you're coming or not. It's so cute

It's also funny when he knows that you're mad at him and you're yelling at him and he sits there NOT look at you, flicking his ears, his eyes have this "I'm ignoring you" look kinda like he's rolling his eyes, but in cat-style. LOL such a spoiled kitty- I can never stay mad....

aww...you're making me miss my son now. I want to go home......

One of my babies does that... She goes somewhere she''s not allowed to gp or makes a mess, and she comes running with this "innocent" look on her face... "I didn''t do anything! You love me, right?

" And sure enough I find a mess... Silly cat. I love my babies so much, and I MISS them!!

Great story Caribou!

anchor31: Cats are the silliest! I know when mine have done something wrong too! They always come running from somewhere and when they see you, they are like "Oh...uh...Hi! What are you doing here? No need to go in that room, by the way. Nothing to see there...

Aww, what a cute kitty!

I have the problem that "my" dog always looks guilty. (Well, she was "mine" when I still lived with my parents.) Even when one of the other dogs made a mess, she''d still have this "oh no, I know that I''m going to get in trouble" look on her face and so our first instinct was to blame her. We finally figured out that she perpetually looks guilty... Silly girl.

Cats are notorious for their ''Go to H%^*'' looks. They can put a human in it''s place in a snap. Nothing quite like apologizing to your cat

Dogs can''t hid guilt for nothing. You can always tell what when and where a dog did something wrong just by the look he gives you.

I think you can tell exactly what dog''s been up to by the position of his tail! A dog''s tail, in many ways, is like the expression on a cat''s or person''s face. If my dog''s done something "wrong" or something he knows we''d disapprove of, his tail goes down (like the expression "tail between his legs"), if he''s feeling proud it stands straight up, and if he''s feeling unsure of himself it stands straight back behind him. If he''s super-excited, it wags crazily, etc. Of course, there''s that happy little grin on his face when he''s excited to see us, or there is the sad eyed, quivering nose, "I want some of that" look when we''re eating.

He always knows when we''re leaving the house and we''re going to be gone for more than a few minutes--he will come and sit expectantly by us while we''re getting ready or whatever, and then finally sprawl out on his belly with his chin on his paws, all the while watching us from heavy-lidded eyes. It''s so sad!
