Hi all!

I wanted to post this fun ruby ring I put together recently. It's a 4.5-4.8mm ruby (I don't remember the exact mm measurement) in a pretty stock semi mount. I hope this ring might be inspiration for others to set some of their smaller gems. The diamonds are really bright and sparkly, and I get a surprisingly large number of compliments for a relatively simple ring. The ruby is a really stunning red. The picture show a pink color that I don't see in real life. In person, the ruby is true ruby red, and looks spot on as a Burmese ruby. I may remove it one day to out the ruby in a three stone ring or five stone ring with diamonds, but I likely won't for some time.

Nice! I would enjoy it as it is - when you are ready to make you three/five stone ring, I bet another will come along that you love even more. :))

The tricky part is putting together a pair of rubies! Maybe I'll come across a set for sale, but they always go so quickly--not to mention, the ones I've seen for sale recently are really quite small, and would be too small for the kind of look I've been imagining.

Sweet! A 5 stone would be a divine long term project.

Really pretty! Great find! I noticed your book and I like that author too.

Oooh, are you talking about "The Interpreter of Maladies" or another book entirely?

Thank you! The book is called the Namesake, same author. Its a good book!

I read both but really liked The Namesake the best. Great movie too!

Is it possible to get a closeup of the stone with your camera? I love the colour. Do you have vendour shots? I have never looked at their rubies but maybe I will! :naughty:

That setting works beautifully. I really like the look & it lets the ruby show off. Great until you decide to do something else -- but this is a winner as is.

My camera is sadly my I-phone camera ;( but I will if I can figure something out. Are there any good apps for taking pictures, esp. shots of gems or small things?

The ruby is actually also very clear, but it is impossible to discern from the photo.

Here's a ruby for sale from Simply Sapphires http://www.simplysapphires.com/red/burma-ruby-round-brilliant-0.53-carats-4.6mm?zenid=5mc2vm9tr4sd0m656merr5rvt6 I think I remember mine being a little more expensive (I had it for a while before setting it), but not by that much. I'm curious about the red Songea ruby he has listed, but don't really 'need' another ruby in the same size if its not going to match. I would really, really like to see a Vietnamese ruby in person. I've heard they can be gorgeous, but I haven't really seen any in person. I think they're often called Luc Yen rubies.

I also liked the Namesake a lot, but haven't read her other works. :wavey: Nice to see someone that's interested in the same kind of literature!

Laurie, thank you!! I was actually so surprised by how much I liked the two together. I bought the setting simply to serve as a vehicle through which to wear this ruby, but I actually really do like the look. Its really, really fitting for a smaller stone.

Thank you Minou, Chrono, Ilove, JewelFreak and Tekate!! :appl:

Many things are definitely possible with your iPhone camera. All the gem pictures I've posted here for the last 3 years are using my iPhone 4S. I think there are several other posters who also use their iPhone cameras for gem photography. You can zoom in closer to the gem by "opening" the screen with your fingers in an outward motion. HTH.

The setting is pretty and delicate, however, it will not suit me as I prefer my rings to be chunkier to go with my chunky fat fingers. :))

I like the colour of the stone though as it is my kind of red, being more blue than orange.

Thanks for sharing.

DK :))

I will investigate as soon as I'm home today! I just assumed that zooming would produce a less-clear picture, but I will absolutely give it a shot. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you DK! This is definitely my 'most delicate' ring, but I do like the look! Kind of reminds me of Leon's string theory line--a stretch, but a similar concept!
